How to Build a Conversation AI Flow in Sparkforge

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

The Conversation AI Flow Builder is a visual designer for goal-oriented bot conversations in Sparkforge. Configure bot settings, add AI actions like Capture, Book, and Splitter, and use Custom Triggers to handle conversation paths after the flow ends.

The Conversation AI Flow Builder is a visual workspace for designing structured, goal-oriented bot conversations. Map how your bot greets contacts, captures details, qualifies leads, and books appointments step by step.

Open the Flow Builder

Go to AI Agents → Conversation AI → Create Bot → Create New Bot (Flow Based Builder). The interface looks like the Automation Workflow builder but behaves differently in important ways.

Important: If you launch the Flow Builder, the bot is locked to that flow and cannot be selected from the Conversation AI Trigger inside workflows. If you skip the Flow Builder, the bot stays available to workflow triggers.

Configure Bot Settings

  • Name the bot.
  • Set Bot Status to Auto Pilot.
  • Select the channels the bot should answer on (SMS, Instagram, Facebook, etc).
  • Set max messages high enough for long conversations (100 is a reasonable default).
  • Save.

Set Bot Goals

Bot Goals act as a global prompt that runs alongside every action in the flow.

  • Tone — pick keywords like friendly, confident.
  • Personality — describe style with sentences and merge fields, e.g. "You are a bot for {{ai.business_name}}."
  • Intent — describe the goal, e.g. "Help users choose a goal like {{ai.goals}} and book an appointment."
  • Stop Bot — halts the flow if the contact uses vulgar language or says stop.
  • Human Handover — stops the bot and notifies a human when the bot is stuck.
  • Appointment options — toggle whether the bot can cancel or reschedule.

AI Actions

Click the + in the canvas to add an action. The Flow Builder supports the standard workflow actions plus AI-specific ones.

AI Capture Information (Qualify)

Loops until the objective is met or it hits a stop condition.

  • Objective — up to 500 chars, e.g. "determine the user's name."
  • Update contact field — map the captured value to a field.
  • Skip if filled — skip the objective when the field already has a value.
  • Maximum attempts — cap how many times the bot retries.
  • Don't proceed if criteria not met — ends the conversation with a closing message.
  • Add a tag — tag the contact when the objective completes.

Book Appointment

Loops messages to book on a selected calendar. Branches into Appointment Booked and Appointment not booked.

End Conversation

Definitively ends the chat. Optionally reactivate the bot after a delay (value plus time unit).

AI Splitter

Branches based on previously collected information. No messages are sent. Define the branching question and possible options. No condition met is the catchall.

AI Message vs Custom Message

AI Message generates a reply from your prompt and the conversation context. Custom Message sends the exact text you write, unmodified. Both can wait for a contact reply before moving on.

Transfer Bot

Hands off to a different bot. The contact exits this flow and only returns if another transfer sends them back. Useful when conversation paths are similar but contextually distinct (e.g. one bot per state for insurance).

Continue Conversation

Defines how the bot keeps chatting after a contact reaches an [END] node, instead of leaving them in dead-end context.

Custom Triggers

The default Chat Initiated trigger is the only way to start a flow. After a contact reaches an [END] node, their next message can fire one of up to three Custom Triggers to move them to a different point in the flow.

  • Priority (1-10) — higher number wins when multiple triggers could fire.
  • Sensitivity (Low/Medium/High) — how aggressively the AI breaks the current flow to follow the trigger.

Custom Triggers + If/Else

Route Custom Triggers into an If/Else node to build a clean router. Each branch handles a specific trigger (Chat Initiated, Custom Trigger 1, 2, or 3).

Change a Custom Trigger Path

  1. Click the break-link icon at the bottom of the Custom Trigger.
  2. Click Remove Path.
  3. Click the destination action (valid options highlight green).

Frequently Asked Questions

What starts a Flow Builder bot?
The Chat Initiated trigger is the only way to start the flow. Custom Triggers only fire after a contact reaches an [END] node.
Does an [END] node end the conversation?
No. It ends the current objective path. The chat continues until you use End Conversation or hit max messages or a timeout.
Which actions loop until they succeed?
AI Capture Information and Book Appointment loop until the objective is met or an exit condition (max attempts, refusal) is reached.
What is the difference between AI Message and Custom Message?
AI Message generates a reply based on your prompt and the conversation. Custom Message sends the exact text you wrote with no modifications.
Can I send a contact from one bot to another?
Yes. Use the Transfer Bot action. The contact exits the current flow and only returns if another transfer sends them back.
