Fix Workflow Race Conditions in Sparkforge

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

A race condition happens when two workflow actions fire in the same second and execute out of order or appear to run but don't apply. Inspect execution timestamps from the message deep link, and add a 1-minute Wait step before the affected action to fix it.

What a race condition is

A race condition happens when two or more updates run in the same second. The actions race each other and may execute out of order, or one may report success without actually applying the change.

Open the exact execution from the message

Start from the message that triggered the issue so you're looking at the right run, contact, and timestamp.

  1. Go to Conversations and open the impacted message thread.
  2. Open message details.
  3. Click Workflow (deep link) to open Execution Details with full context loaded.
  4. Review timestamps and action order. If multiple actions fired in the same second, you've found the race.

Fallback if the deep link is missing

Open the workflow, click Logs, and filter or search by contact and the time window around the message.

Example: Add Tag fires but no tag appears

The execution log shows the tag was added successfully, but the contact record has no tag. Looking at the log timestamps, the Add to Workflow trigger and Add Tag action fired in the same second. That's the race.

How to prevent race conditions

Add a Wait action of 1 minute before the action that's losing the race. The wait separates the two updates by enough time that they no longer collide.

With a 1-minute Wait in place, the second action runs after the first has fully committed. No race.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes a workflow race condition?
Two actions firing in the exact same second. Common pattern: a contact triggers a workflow that updates the contact record at the same instant another action tries to read or update it.
How do I confirm a race condition?
Open the execution from the affected message's deep link and check the timestamps. If two relevant actions share the same second, that's a race.
How long should the Wait step be?
One minute is enough in most cases. The point is to separate the two updates so they don't compete for the same record at the same instant.
Can race conditions cause silent failures?
Yes. The execution log can show success when the change wasn't actually applied to the contact record. Always verify on the contact, not just the log.
