Triggers in Sparkforge: How They Work and When to Use Them

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

Triggers are conditional if-this-then-that rules that connect Sparkforge modules. Workflows now cover everything triggers do, with more depth — use Workflows for new automation.

Triggers are conditional rules that link Sparkforge modules together. They run an action whenever a specific event happens — a form submission, a tag change, a payment, an inbound message.

Workflows are now available in every account and cover everything triggers do, plus multi-step logic, branching, and timing. Use Workflows for new automation. Existing triggers continue to run.

What triggers do

Think of triggers as the wiring behind the scenes. When something happens in one part of Sparkforge, a trigger fires an action somewhere else — sending an SMS, adding a tag, creating an opportunity, pushing data to an external tool.

Example use case

A lead fills out a form on a landing page, gets pushed into Sparkforge, and the trigger fires an SMS to the business owner letting them know a new lead just came in. No manual checking, no missed leads.

Create a trigger

  1. Open Triggers.
  2. Click + New Basic Rule.
  3. Pick a trigger event from the dropdown and add filters.
  4. Click + Add action.
  5. Pick the action and configure its filters.
  6. Name the trigger.
  7. Click the Draft dropdown and select Activate.

Triggers vs Workflows

  • Triggers — Single event, single action. Lightweight.
  • Workflows — Multi-step, branching, time delays, internal notifications, and the full action library.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I build new automation as a trigger or a workflow?
Use Workflows. They cover everything triggers do plus branching, time delays, and richer actions. Triggers are still supported but workflows are the active development path.
Will my old triggers stop working?
No. Existing triggers continue to run. You can leave them in place or migrate the logic into a workflow when convenient.
What is the difference between a trigger and a workflow?
Triggers run a single action on a single event. Workflows chain multiple steps, support branching and timing, and offer a deeper action library. Workflows are the modern replacement.
How do I activate a draft trigger?
Open the trigger, click the Draft dropdown at the top, and select Activate. Until you do, the trigger will not fire.
