How to Force App Updates on the Client Portal Mobile Apps

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

In Sites > Client Portal > Settings, toggle on Force App Update, set the latest version number, and add the App Store and Play Store links to require an update on launch.

The Force App Update feature blocks Client Portal mobile users from continuing on an old build. On launch, the app prompts them to update through the App Store or Google Play before any other action.

Why force an update

  • Pushes the latest security patches to every active user.
  • Avoids support tickets caused by stale builds.
  • Keeps everyone on the same feature set.

Enable Force App Update

  1. Open the Sparkforge dashboard and go to Sites.
  2. Select Client Portal.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Find Force App Update and toggle it on.
  5. Enter the latest version number you want to require.
  6. Paste the direct download links for the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
  7. Click Save.

What the user sees

  1. On launch, an update prompt appears.
  2. Tapping the update option redirects to the right app store.
  3. Until the update completes, the rest of the app is locked.
  4. After updating, the user resumes normal use.

When to use it

Reserve forced updates for major releases that include security fixes or breaking changes. For minor updates, lean on a soft prompt or push notification so users update on their schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a user skip the update?
No. Once Force App Update is on, the user has to install the new version before the rest of the app loads.
How often should I require updates?
Use it for major releases with security fixes or critical changes. Smaller updates are better as soft prompts.
Will users on the latest version see the prompt?
No. Only users below the required version number see the prompt.
Can I notify users in advance?
Yes. Use the app's notification system or a push notification to give users a heads-up before flipping the toggle.
