Auto-Reply to Facebook and Instagram Comments with GPT
Pair the Sparkforge GPT action with the Respond on Comment action to generate context-aware replies to Facebook and Instagram comments instead of cycling through pre-written responses.
The Respond on Comment action lets you queue up a list of pre-written replies. That works for routine engagement, but it doesn't react to what the commenter actually said. Pairing it with a GPT step does.
How the flow works
- Start with a trigger — Facebook – User comments on a post or Instagram – User comments on a post.
- Add a GPT powered by OpenAI action. Set the Action Type to Custom and write a prompt that describes the kind of reply you want — friendly, on-brand, short.
- From the custom value picker, drop the Facebook or Instagram comment body into the prompt so the model has context.
- Save the GPT action, then add a Respond on Comment action after it.
- In the response field, pull in the GPT step's output from the custom value picker. The reply posts back tailored to whatever the user said.
What to put in the prompt
Be explicit about tone, length, and what to do with edge cases. A workable starter:
You are responding to a {{trigger.comment_body}} on our business page. Reply in 1-2 sentences, casual but professional. If the comment is a complaint, acknowledge it and ask them to DM us.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need separate workflows for Facebook and Instagram?
Yes — each platform has its own trigger. The rest of the flow (GPT step plus Respond on Comment) is the same shape.
Will the AI reply to spam or attacks?
It will unless your prompt says otherwise. Add an instruction to skip or escalate hostile comments. You can also branch on sentiment with a separate GPT sentiment step.
Can I review the AI's response before it posts?
Build in a notification step that pings Slack or email with the proposed reply, then gate the Respond on Comment action behind a manual approval. The trade-off is latency.
Which Sparkforge plan is needed for this?
Workflows and the GPT action are part of Standard ($465/mo) and Pro ($730/mo). Token usage bills pass-through at OpenAI's rates.
