How to Create and Update Custom Object Records

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

Create Custom Object records by filling in primary fields, edit them by opening the record and clicking Edit, and bulk-load via CSV with Create & Update mode.

Custom Objects let you model business entities like pets, cars, properties, or policies inside Sparkforge. Records are managed from the object's list view.

Create a new record

  1. Open the Custom Object from the left navigation (for example Pets, Cars).
  2. Click Add in the top right (the button is labeled per object, e.g. Add Pet).
  3. Fill in the primary field. Only primary fields are editable at creation time.
  4. Click Save, or Save and Add Another to keep going without closing the form.

Update an existing record

  1. Open the Custom Object list and click the record name to open it.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. Update text, numeric, dropdown, or other fields as needed.
  4. Click Save, or Cancel to discard.

Manage related objects

You can link Custom Object records to contacts, products, other Custom Objects, and so on.

  1. Open the record and find the Related Objects section.
  2. Click Add next to the object type you want to link (for example Contacts).
  3. Search for the record and click Associate.

Delete a record

  1. Open the record.
  2. Click the kebab menu (three dots) in the top right.
  3. Choose Delete Record and confirm.

Deletion is permanent. Once a Custom Object record is deleted, it cannot be restored.

Import records from CSV

  1. Open the Custom Object and click Import in the top right.
  2. Select the objects you want to import.
  3. Choose Create & Update as the import mode.
  4. If multiple unique fields are mapped, pick the dedupe field.
  5. Map the primary and required fields first, then the additional fields (including Owner and Followers).
  6. Enable Update empty values if you want blank cells in the CSV to overwrite existing values during update. Primary and required fields are still excluded from blanking.
  7. Click Start Import.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I edit non-primary fields when I create a record?
No. Only primary fields are editable at creation. Save the record first, then open it and click Edit to update the rest.
Is deleting a Custom Object record reversible?
No. Deletion is permanent. There is no undo or restore.
What does Create & Update mode do during a CSV import?
It creates new records for rows that do not match an existing record, and updates existing records for rows that do match (based on the dedupe field).
Will blank cells in my CSV erase existing data?
Only if you enable Update empty values. Primary and required fields are excluded from being blanked out either way.
How do I link a record to a contact?
Open the record, scroll to Related Objects, click Add next to Contacts, search for the contact, and click Associate.
