Create Customer List Custom Audiences in Sparkforge Ad Manager

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

In Sparkforge Ad Manager, build a Meta customer list custom audience from a CSV upload or a Smart List. Smart List audiences can be static (locked at creation) or dynamic (auto-updates as the list changes).

A Meta customer list custom audience targets ads on Facebook and Instagram using your own customer data — emails, phone numbers, and other identifiers Meta can match to user profiles. Sparkforge Ad Manager builds these audiences from a CSV file or directly from a Smart List in your CRM.

Where to create a custom audience

Two entry points:

  • During campaign creation — at the ad set level, open Audience Controls > Intended Audience. Under the Retargeting tab, click Create new or select retargeting audience and choose Create a Custom Audience.
  • From settings — open Ad Manager Settings > Meta Audiences to build audiences in advance.

Create the audience

  1. Click Create a Custom Audience.
  2. Select Customer List as the source.
  3. Choose your data method: CSV upload or Smart List.

Method 1: CSV upload

  • Format the CSV per Meta's spec — incorrect formatting will fail the upload.
  • Use the sample file Sparkforge provides as a template.
  • Upload and proceed.

Method 2: Smart List (static or dynamic)

  1. Select Use Smart List.
  2. Choose one or more pre-created Smart Lists from the dropdown (only existing lists from the Contacts section appear).
  3. Under Advanced Conditions, choose how the audience behaves over time:
    • No, only include the contacts currently on the Smart List — static. Locks the audience to whoever was on the list at creation.
    • Yes, include the dynamic updates — dynamic. New contacts join automatically; removed contacts drop off.
  4. Review the contact count.
  5. Name the audience and click Create Audience.

Things to know

  • Meta enforces a minimum audience size before the audience is usable in a campaign.
  • You must accept Meta's Customer List Custom Audience Terms before the first audience is created.
  • Once ready, the audience appears in the Retargeting Audience dropdown and in the Audiences tab.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between static and dynamic audiences?
Static locks the audience to the contacts present at creation. Dynamic updates automatically as the source Smart List changes — contacts added join, contacts removed drop off.
Can I use any contact list as a Smart List source?
Only Smart Lists pre-created in the Contacts section. Build the Smart List first, then it becomes selectable in the audience dropdown.
Why won't my audience target my campaign?
Meta enforces minimum audience size requirements. Audiences below the threshold won't be usable. Increase the source list or relax the segmentation.
Do I need a CSV in a specific format?
Yes. Meta requires specific identifiers and formatting. Download the sample file from the upload step and prepare your data to match it before uploading.
