Use the Contact Tag Workflow Trigger in Sparkforge
The Contact Tag trigger starts a workflow when any tag is added or removed from a contact. Filter by Tag Added or Tag Removed to target the change you want.
Tags categorize contacts so you can search, segment, and automate against them. The Contact Tag workflow trigger watches for tag changes and starts a workflow when one happens.
What the trigger does
It checks whether any tag is added to or removed from a contact. Without a filter, it fires on both. Add a filter for Tag Added or Tag Removed to target one direction.
What can change a tag
Manual edits in the contacts list
From Contacts, select one or more contacts and click Add tag or Remove tag. Bulk actions count.
Workflow actions
An Add Tag or Remove Tag step inside another workflow will fire this trigger when a contact reaches it.
Third-party tools (Zapier and similar)
Integrations can add tags through the API, which fires the trigger. Tags cannot be removed via Zapier-style integrations through this path.
CSV imports
Include a tags column in the CSV. Comma-separate multiple tags inside a single cell. The advanced import options also let you apply tags during import. CSV imports update existing contacts when Allow Duplicate contacts is off and the email or phone matches an existing record.
Pattern examples
- Onboarding kickoff: tag "client-signed" added on the contact triggers a welcome SMS, an internal task, and a folder creation.
- Win-back: tag "churned" added triggers a 30-day re-engagement email sequence.
- Cleanup: tag "unsubscribed" added removes the contact from active marketing workflows.
Tips
- Use one trigger per direction (added vs removed) when the actions differ.
- Combine the Contact Tag trigger with other filters in the workflow to scope further (e.g., only if a pipeline stage is "Lead").
- Tags are case-sensitive in some areas. Standardize naming to avoid duplicate tags like "VIP" and "vip".
