The Update Contact Field action modifies one or more fields on the workflow's current contact. You can clear existing values or replace them with new data, all without manual editing.

The Update Contact Field action edits one or more fields on the contact attached to a workflow. Use it to keep records current — addresses, lead source, DND status, custom fields — without anyone touching the contact manually.

What it does

The action targets the workflow's current contact and writes the values you specify. Two modes are available:

  • Clear — wipe the existing field value.
  • Update — write a new value, overwriting whatever is there.

You can chain Clear and Update in the same action — useful when you want to fully replace a field rather than risk leftover data.

Configure the action

  1. Go to Automation and open the Workflows menu.
  2. Open the workflow you want to edit, or click + Create Workflow and start from scratch.
  3. Click the + icon and choose Update Contact Field.
  4. Name the action clearly — e.g., Update Contact Address.
  5. Pick the action type: Clear, Update, or both.
  6. Click Add field and choose the fields to modify (City, Country, Phone, custom fields, etc.).
  7. Save the action and test with a sample contact.
  8. Toggle the workflow to Publish.

Use cases

Customer moves cities

Trigger: contact updates address through a form. Action: set City and Country to the new values. Outcome: CRM reflects the new location, communications stay relevant.

Honor an unsubscribe

Trigger: contact clicks unsubscribe. Action: set DND = Yes. Outcome: contact stops receiving marketing, your sender reputation stays clean.

Track lead source for a campaign

Trigger: lead submits the Spring Sale form. Action: set Contact Source = Spring Sale Campaign. Outcome: attribution tracked end to end.

Tag tier upgrades

Trigger: contact upgrades plan. Action: set Subscription Tier = Pro. Outcome: downstream automations pick up the new tier and adjust messaging.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this action create a contact if none exists?
No. Update Contact Field only modifies the contact already attached to the workflow. Use Create Contact or Find Contact first if you don't have one.
Can I update custom fields with this action?
Yes. Any custom field you've defined on the contact object can be picked from the field selector and assigned a new value.
What does Clear do versus Update?
Clear wipes the field to empty. Update writes a new value. You can run both on the same field to fully replace existing data.
How do I test the action safely?
Use a test contact, run the workflow once, and check the contact record. Publish the workflow only after the field changes match what you expect.
