How to Use the DND Contact Workflow Action in Sparkforge

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

The DND Contact action enables or disables Do-Not-Disturb on a contact across all channels or specific ones, in either inbound or outbound direction. Use it to honor opt-outs and block inbound spam automatically.

The DND Contact action toggles Do-Not-Disturb on a contact from inside a workflow. You can flip DND for all channels or specific ones (SMS, email, calls, etc.), and choose whether you're blocking Inbound communication, Outbound, or both.

Use it to honor opt-outs without manual cleanup, and to filter inbound spam from polluting your pipeline.

What the action controls

  • DND direction: Inbound or Outbound.
  • Enable or disable DND for all channels.
  • Enable or disable DND for specific channels.

Setup steps

  1. Log into your sub-account.
  2. Go to Automations > Workflows.
  3. Open or create a workflow.
  4. Add a trigger (e.g., Customer Booked Appointment).
  5. Click +, search for Enable/Disable DND, and add it.
  6. Name the action.
  7. Pick the DND direction (Inbound or Outbound).
  8. Choose Enable or Disable, then pick All Channels or specific ones.
  9. Publish and save.

Suggested triggers

Appointment Status Changed

When an appointment moves to Completed or Showed, disable DND so follow-up communications can resume.

Appointment Scheduled

Add a wait condition (e.g., 1 hour past scheduled end), then disable DND.

Task Completed

Tie DND state to follow-up tasks like thank-yous or surveys.

Custom Field Update

Use a field that flips when an appointment is marked complete to trigger DND off.

Contact Created (block inbound spam)

When a new contact is created via inbound call or SMS that matches spam patterns, enable DND with direction set to Inbound.

Logging and attribution

When a workflow toggles DND, it's logged in Conversations and activity logs as DND Enabled by Workflows or DND Disabled by Workflows. Manual changes by a team member log as DND Enabled/Disabled by User. Changes made by the contact log as DND Enabled/Disabled by Contact. This applies across all channels.

Examples

Honor SMS opt-out

  1. Trigger when a contact opts out of SMS.
  2. Add DND Contact.
  3. Enable DND for SMS only. Email and other channels stay open.

Block inbound spam

  1. Trigger when a contact is flagged as spam (custom field, tag, or manual review).
  2. Add DND Contact.
  3. Enable DND for all channels with direction Inbound. Inbound calls and SMS from that contact are blocked.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Inbound and Outbound DND?
Outbound DND blocks your system from sending messages or calls to the contact. Inbound DND blocks calls and SMS from the contact reaching your system. They're independent — you can enable one without the other.
Can I enable DND for just one channel?
Yes. Choose specific channels (SMS, email, calls) instead of All Channels when you configure the action.
How do I tell if DND was set by a workflow vs a person?
Activity logs and Conversations show DND Enabled by Workflows, by User, or by Contact, so you always know the source.
Can I undo DND in the same workflow?
Yes. Add a second DND Contact action with Disable selected, gated on whatever condition should reopen communication.
