How to Use the Add Contact Tag Workflow Action

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

The Add Contact Tag workflow action attaches one or more tags to a contact when they hit that step in a workflow. Tags drive segmentation, downstream automation triggers, and reporting.

The Add Contact Tag action is one of the most useful steps in a Sparkforge workflow. It attaches one or more tags to a contact automatically — based on the trigger, prior steps, or conditional branches — so your database stays organized without manual tagging.

What it does

When a contact reaches this step, every tag you've selected is applied to their record. Tags can drive segmentation in smart lists, trigger other workflows (via the Contact Tag trigger), and filter campaigns. They're case-sensitive: Facebook and facebook are two different tags.

Why use tags inside workflows

  • Segmentation: group contacts by behavior, source, or stage.
  • Automation routing: downstream steps and other workflows can branch on tag presence.
  • Personalization: tags inform which message variant a contact receives.
  • Reporting: filter dashboards and lists by tag.

Configuration options

Select tags

Pick one or more existing tags from the dropdown. The dropdown supports search. Selected tags appear as labeled chips above the field.

Remove tags from the action

Click the x on a tag chip to drop it from this action. This only changes the action setup — it does not strip the tag off any contact.

Add a new tag inline

If the tag you need doesn't exist yet, type its name and click Add New Tag. The new tag becomes available throughout your account immediately.

Standard vs Dynamic mode

Open the three-dot menu next to the Tags field to toggle between Standard (apply the literal tags you selected) and Dynamic (build tag names from workflow variables at runtime).

Step-by-step setup

  1. Go to Automation in the left nav and open or create a workflow.
  2. In the workflow builder, open the Actions panel and pick Add Contact Tag under the Contact section.
  3. Give the action a clear name describing what it tags and why.
  4. Pick existing tags or type a new tag name and click Add New Tag.
  5. Optionally switch to Dynamic mode if you want runtime-built tag names.
  6. Click Save Action.

Common patterns

  • Tag a contact booked-consult when they complete a calendar booking, then trigger a confirmation workflow off that tag.
  • Use the Opportunity Custom Field Changed trigger to drive a tag like stage-quoted for downstream segmentation.
  • Combine multiple tags in one action to capture both source (fb-ads) and intent (warm-lead) in a single step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add multiple tags in one action?
Yes. Select as many tags as you need from the dropdown — they all apply to the contact when the workflow reaches this step.
Can this action remove tags?
No. Use the Remove Contact Tag action for tag removal. Add Contact Tag is additive only.
Are tags case-sensitive?
Yes. Facebook and facebook are stored as separate tags, so pick a casing convention and stick to it.
Will applying a tag here trigger another workflow?
Yes — if you have a workflow using the Contact Tag trigger that listens for that tag.
Can I tag based on an opportunity custom field value?
Yes. Use the Opportunity Custom Field Changed trigger or workflow conditional logic, then route to an Add Contact Tag action with the appropriate tag.
