The Create Contact workflow action adds a new contact or updates an existing one inside a workflow. It's the foundation for any automation that needs to capture leads, sync contact data, or push records in from outside sources.

What it does

The action checks for an existing contact by primary identifier (typically email or phone). If found, it updates the record. If not, it creates a new one. Both standard and custom fields are supported, so you can shape the contact record to match your business.

Why use it

  • Keeps contact data current without manual entry.
  • Handles onboarding, lead intake, and data sync in one action.
  • Pairs cleanly with form submissions, webhooks, and import workflows.
  • Supports standard fields (Name, Email, Phone, Address) and any custom field you've defined.

Configure the action

  1. Open the workflow builder under Automation. Create a new workflow or open an existing one.
  2. Click the + icon and choose Create Contact.
  3. Name the action something descriptive, like Create Contact from Web Form.
  4. Map the fields:
    • Standard fields — First Name, Last Name, Email, Phone, Address, etc.
    • Custom fields — anything you've defined, like Membership ID or Referral Source.
  5. Click Save.
  6. Test with sample data, then publish the workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Create Contact duplicate records?
No. The action checks for an existing contact by primary identifier (usually email or phone) and updates it if found. New records are only created when no match exists.
Can I set custom fields with this action?
Yes. Any custom field you've created on the contact object is available in the field mapping section of the action.
Should I use Create Contact or Find Contact?
Use Create Contact when you want to add or upsert. Use Find Contact when the workflow already needs to act on an existing record and you don't want to create one if it doesn't exist.
Does this fire if the workflow already has a contact attached?
Yes — and it will update the attached contact's fields with whatever you've mapped. To avoid overwrites, only map the fields you want changed.
