Workflow Action: Create or Update Opportunity in Sparkforge

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

The Create or Update Opportunity action either creates a new opportunity or updates a matching one in your selected pipeline and stage. It is being deprecated for new workflows in favor of separate Create Opportunity and Update Opportunity actions.

The Create or Update Opportunity workflow action manages opportunities in your sales pipeline as part of an automated workflow. It either creates a new opportunity or updates an existing one based on the configuration you set.

What this action does

When the workflow runs the action, Sparkforge looks at the pipeline and stage you configured and either creates a new opportunity record or updates a matching one. It is useful for keeping pipeline data in sync with leads coming in from forms, calendars, and integrations.

What this action does not do

  • It does not automatically update the opportunity that triggered the workflow.
  • It does not use the opportunity returned by an earlier Find Opportunity step.

If you need either of those behaviors, use the dedicated Update Opportunity action instead.

Deprecation notice

The combined Create or Update Opportunity action is being phased out for new workflows. Use Create Opportunity or Update Opportunity instead. Those split actions support more granular control, including using the triggering opportunity and chaining off a Find Opportunity step.

Existing workflows already using the combined action keep working as is.

Example: new lead from a calendar appointment

You want a new opportunity created every time someone books through your calendar funnel.

  1. Trigger the workflow when a new contact is created from the calendar funnel.
  2. Add the Create Opportunity action.
  3. Set Action Name to something like "Calendar Lead — Create Opportunity".
  4. Pick the pipeline (for example, "Promotion Pipeline") and the initial stage.
  5. Set source, status, and lead value as needed.
  6. Save the action.

Every booking now creates a tracked opportunity in your pipeline automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use Create or Update Opportunity for new workflows?
No. Use the dedicated Create Opportunity or Update Opportunity actions instead. They give you more control and support modern features like updating the triggering opportunity.
Will my existing workflows break when this action is fully deprecated?
No. Existing workflows using the combined action will continue to work. Deprecation only blocks adding it to new workflows.
Why does this action ignore the triggering opportunity?
The combined action was built before Sparkforge supported context-aware opportunity actions. The newer Update Opportunity action can target the opportunity that triggered the workflow directly.
Can I use this action with a Find Opportunity step?
Not in a meaningful way. The combined action runs its own internal lookup logic and ignores any opportunity returned by a prior Find Opportunity step. Use Update Opportunity if you need that chaining.
