Why You Can't Edit Certain WhatsApp Templates in Sparkforge
WhatsApp templates lock for five reasons: Meta approval, API origin, active use, strict category, or under review. Clone the template, edit the copy, and resubmit for approval.
If a WhatsApp template won't let you edit the body, header, or footer, one of five things is happening. Here's what each lock means and how to work around it.
1. Meta has approved the template
Once Meta approves a template, the content locks. You can sometimes still rename it or change its category, but body, header, and footer text are fixed. To change content, create a new template.
2. The template was created via the API
Templates created through the WhatsApp API or a third-party partner tool typically can't be edited from the platform UI. They're locked for security and consistency.
3. The template is in use or was sent recently
If a template is in active workflows or conversations — or was just sent — it locks temporarily to prevent disruption mid-send.
4. The template is in a strict category (e.g., Authentication)
Authentication templates (OTPs, verification codes) follow a fixed Meta-mandated format. You can only adjust allowed parameters; the rest is off-limits.
5. The template is under review or has been flagged
If Meta has flagged the template for low quality or it's still under review, editing is paused until Meta resolves it.
What to do instead
Clone the template
- Go to Settings → WhatsApp → Templates.
- Click the three-dot icon next to the template and select Clone Template.
- Rename and edit the new version, then click Save.
- Submit the cloned template for Meta approval.
Delete the old template
If the original is no longer relevant, delete it to keep your template list clean.
