WhatsApp Template Categories: Marketing, Utility, Authentication
WhatsApp templates fall into three categories: Marketing (promotional, flexible), Utility (transactional, user-triggered), and Authentication (OTPs only). Picking the wrong category gets the template rejected.
Every WhatsApp message template you create gets classified into one of three categories: Marketing, Utility, or Authentication. WhatsApp reviews your selection against the actual template content. If they disagree, the template is rejected and you have to revise and resubmit.
Marketing Templates
The most flexible category. Use these to build awareness, drive sales, retarget, promote your app, or strengthen customer relationships.
Awareness
Tell subscribed customers about your business, products, or services.
"Did you know? We installed a new tower in your area for better network coverage. Learn more at {{1}}."
Sales
Promotional offers, coupons, and content meant to drive a purchase.
"As a thank-you for your last order, take 15% off your next one. Use code LOYAL15 at checkout: {{1}}."
Retargeting
Reach customers who visited your site, used your app, or engaged with your products.
"You left items in your cart. We saved them. Check out here: {{1}}."
App Promotion
Ask customers to install your app or use a specific feature.
Build Customer Relationships
Personalized messages — birthdays, thank-you notes, virtual assistant introductions.
Templates with mixed content (e.g., an order update bundled with a promo) and templates whose content is unclear (just "{{1}}" or "Congratulations!") are also classified as Marketing.
Utility Templates
Triggered by a user action or request. They must reference a specific transaction, account, subscription, or interaction. An order confirmation has to include the order number.
Opt-In Management
Confirm opt-in or opt-out collected via another channel.
Order Management
Confirm, update, or cancel a specific order with details in the message body.
"Your order {{1}} is confirmed. We'll let you know when it ships."
Account Alerts and Updates
Time-sensitive alerts, payment reminders, safety information. No upsells, no cross-sells.
"Reminder: your monthly subscription to {{1}} will be billed on {{2}} to the card on file."
Feedback Surveys
Collect feedback on past orders or interactions. Cannot be used to surface upsell opportunities.
Continue a Conversation
Move a conversation that started elsewhere (web chat, phone) onto WhatsApp — only when the user requested it.
Authentication Templates
The most restricted category. Used only for one-time passcodes (OTPs) — typically 4-8 digit alphanumeric codes for login, account verification, or recovery.
Authentication templates must:
- Use WhatsApp's preset authentication template format
- Configure a one-time password button (copy-code or one-tap)
- Contain no URLs, media, or emojis
- Keep parameter values to 15 characters or fewer
Examples
"{{1}} is your verification code."
"{{1}} is your verification code. For your security, do not share this code."
"{{1}} is your verification code. This code expires in 15 minutes."
How to Avoid Rejection
- Match the category to the actual content. A Utility template with a promo line will be reclassified as Marketing — and rejected if you submitted it as Utility.
- Keep messages clear and specific. Vague templates get classified as Marketing by default.
- For Authentication, follow the preset format exactly. No URLs, no emojis, no media.
- If a template is rejected, fix the category or content and resubmit.
