Fix WhatsApp Template Error: Parameter Contains URL

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

Meta does not allow full URLs inside WhatsApp template body variables. Move the link into the approved static body, into a CTA website button, or into a dynamic button suffix.

If you see body: Parameter at index contains URL when sending a WhatsApp template through Sparkforge, the template body has a variable like {{1}} and you are passing a URL into it. Meta blocks URLs inside body variables for anti-phishing reasons.

Why it happens

  • You passed text like https://example.com/deal/123 into a body variable.
  • The template body was approved as plain text, with variables expected to hold names, codes, or dates — not links.
  • You used a URL shortener inside a variable. Many shorteners are blocked in body parameters.
  • The template should be using a CTA website button, not a body variable, for the link.

Option A — put the link directly in the body

Submit a template where the URL is part of the approved static body, with no variable around it.

Example body: "Hi {{1}}, please review your offer: https://example.com/offers"

Use this when the link is the same for everyone.

Option B — use a CTA website button

Add or modify the template to include a Call-to-Action website button.

  • Button URL (base): https://example.com/order/
  • Button text: View Order
  • Optional dynamic suffix: append a per-recipient value like an order ID at send time.

Buttons keep the body clean and let Meta approve the URL pattern up front.

Option C — rewrite the variable

If the variable does not need a URL, swap the dynamic value for a non-link token (order number, name, code) and link the customer back to a known landing page through a button.

What not to do

  • Do not paste a shortened URL into a body variable. Meta still detects it.
  • Do not edit the body text after approval and assume it will pass at send time. Variables that previously held plain text cannot suddenly hold URLs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Meta block URLs in WhatsApp template body variables?
It is an anti-phishing and quality control rule. Meta requires URLs to be part of the approved template body or attached to a button, so the destination is reviewed up front.
Can I use a URL shortener as a workaround?
No. Most shorteners are blocked inside body parameters and Meta still flags the variable as containing a URL.
What is a CTA website button?
A button attached to the template with a fixed base URL and optional dynamic suffix. The customer taps the button instead of a link in the message body.
Will my existing template work if I just move the URL into the static body?
Only after Meta re-approves the new body. Template changes require resubmission.
Can I have both a body variable and a button on the same template?
Yes, as long as the body variable holds a non-URL value (name, code, etc.) and the link sits in the button.
