WhatsApp Delivery Status in Sparkforge Workflows

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

Sparkforge workflows can wait for WhatsApp delivery status and branch with If/Else logic, letting you fall back to SMS or email when a WhatsApp message does not deliver.

WhatsApp delivery status support inside Sparkforge workflows lets you wait for Meta's delivery confirmation before deciding the next step. That means you can build branching logic that falls back to SMS or email when WhatsApp fails.

Prerequisites

  • WhatsApp must be subscribed and enabled on the location account. Set up WhatsApp on the subaccount before building the workflow.
  • For business-initiated conversations, you need an approved WhatsApp template.

Recipe

Sparkforge ships a prebuilt WhatsApp Delivery Status recipe under Automations. Use the recipe as a starting point, or build the flow from scratch using the steps below.

Building it from scratch

  1. Go to Automation > Create Workflow > Start from Scratch.
  2. Add your trigger.
  3. Add a WhatsApp Action and select the WhatsApp template.
  4. Enable the Wait for WhatsApp Message Delivery Status toggle, then save the action.
  5. Add an If/Else action.
  6. Set the condition: Contact Details > Valid WhatsApp. Add branches for True and False.
  7. On the False and None branches, add fallback actions: send SMS, send email, or both.

How the wait toggle works

With Wait for WhatsApp Message Delivery Status enabled, the contact stays in the workflow until Meta returns a delivery status. Without the toggle, the workflow continues immediately and you cannot reliably branch on delivery outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the WhatsApp delivery status feature do?
It lets workflows pause until Meta returns a delivery status for a sent WhatsApp message, then use that status to decide the next workflow step. You can branch with If/Else based on whether the message was delivered.
Why would I fall back to SMS or email?
WhatsApp delivery is not guaranteed — the recipient may not have WhatsApp, may be offline, or may have blocked your business. Falling back to SMS or email ensures the message still reaches them through a channel they use.
What does the wait toggle actually do?
It holds the contact in the workflow until Meta returns the delivery status. Without it, the workflow advances immediately and you have no reliable way to branch on whether the message was delivered.
Do I need an approved template to use this?
For business-initiated conversations, yes. WhatsApp requires approved templates for any outbound message that starts a conversation outside the 24-hour customer service window.
