WhatsApp Countdown Timer Buttons in Sparkforge

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

Sparkforge lets you attach fixed, recurring, or dynamic countdown timers to WhatsApp template buttons. Taps route to your active offer page before expiry and a fallback page after.

Countdown timers in WhatsApp templates put the same Sparkforge timer you use in emails and funnels inside a WhatsApp button. When a recipient taps, they are routed to your active link or expired link based on the timer’s live status — so every message has a real deadline tied to a real page.

The three timer types

  • Fixed: ends at a specific date and time. Use it for one-time campaigns like a Black Friday close.
  • Recurring: repeats on a daily or weekly schedule. Good for evergreen offers and weekly specials.
  • Dynamic: per-contact duration that starts when the WhatsApp message is sent or delivered. Use it for “redeem within 12 hours” style offers.

How to add a countdown timer to a WhatsApp template

  1. Go to Settings → WhatsApp and open the Templates tab.
  2. Click + Create Template or open an existing template. Fill in name, category, language, header, body, and footer.
  3. Under Buttons, click + Add Button and select Countdown Timer.
  4. Open the timer dropdown and pick an existing timer or click + Create New.
  5. Click Edit Timer under Timer URL. Configure the timer type, duration or end time, active link, and expired link.
  6. For dynamic timers, choose the trigger: WhatsApp message is sent or WhatsApp message is delivered.
  7. Review the message preview and click Create to publish the template.

Active vs expired routing

The active link is your live offer, checkout, or booking page that the timer points to before expiry. The expired link is the fallback — usually a waitlist or alternative offer — that loads after the timer hits zero. Set both, or recipients who tap late will land on a stale page.

Workflow branching

You can branch automations on whether a contact tapped the timer button, so follow-up messaging matches the action they took.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use more than one countdown timer in a WhatsApp message?
You can add up to two countdown timer buttons per template, optionally combined with Visit Website or Trackable Website buttons.
Which timer type should I pick for a one-time event?
Use a fixed timer. It ends at a specific date and time, which fits one-off campaigns like a Black Friday close or a webinar registration deadline.
How does a dynamic timer differ from a fixed timer?
A dynamic timer starts per contact when the WhatsApp is sent or delivered. Each recipient gets the same duration but a different end time, so the offer feels personal.
What happens if someone taps the button after the timer expires?
They are routed to the expired link you configured — typically a waitlist, alternate offer, or thank-you page — instead of the active offer URL.
Can I reuse one timer across multiple WhatsApp templates?
Yes. Timers are saved at the account level, so you can attach the same timer to multiple templates, emails, or funnels and edit it in one place.
