Getting Started with Countdown Timers in Sparkforge

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

Sparkforge countdown timers add urgency to emails, funnels, and landing pages. Build fixed, recurring, or dynamic timers and set both active and expired redirect links before saving.

A countdown timer counts down to a specific deadline so visitors act before time runs out. Common uses: sales, launches, limited-time offers, event registration.

Why countdown timers work

  • Urgency. Visible time pressure pushes immediate action.
  • Conversion lift. VWO has measured up to 27% conversion lift with timers.
  • Exclusivity. Limited-time framing makes the offer feel special.
  • Engagement. Keeps visitors on the page longer.

When to use one

  • Retail: sale deadlines or shipping cutoffs ("Two hours left for next-day delivery").
  • Fashion: new collection drops, runway events.
  • Travel: time before departure or fare expiry.
  • Media: subscription renewal reminders.
  • Events: ticket pre-sales and event start times.
  • Non-profits: match-donation windows.
  • Transactional emails: upcoming event excitement.

Timer types

Fixed

Counts down to a single date and time. Best for Black Friday, product launches, fixed-deadline offers.

Recurring

Resets after hitting zero. Best for ongoing weekly or monthly promotions.

Dynamic

Personal deadline per recipient based on their actions (e.g., 1 hour from email open).

Design considerations

  • Style the timer to match your brand.
  • Place it prominently — top of the email or above the fold on a landing page.
  • Set redirects for both active and expired states.
  • Stay consistent across emails and pages so the timer feels real.
  • Use an expiry image for after the deadline passes.

Active and expired links

Active link: sends users to the offer or checkout page. Use the same timer on that destination so when it expires, visitors are redirected to the expired page.

Expired link: the page shown after the timer hits zero. In emails, the expired image links here. In funnels, the expired page loads automatically. Both links must be set before saving.

Create a countdown timer

  1. Open Marketing > Countdown Timer and click New.
  2. Pick a template and click Continue with this template.
  3. Choose timer type: Fixed, Recurring, or Dynamic.
  4. Configure details. Fixed needs an end date and time. Recurring needs duration and loop count.
  5. Add active and expired links.
  6. Customize styling — colors, fonts, expiry image, time format.
  7. Rename and save the timer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a fixed and a dynamic timer?
Fixed timers count down to one shared deadline for everyone. Dynamic timers calculate a personal deadline per recipient based on their actions, like the moment they open an email.
Do I have to set both active and expired links?
Yes. Both links must be configured before saving so the timer redirects correctly when it expires.
When should I use a recurring timer?
Ongoing promotions on a fixed cadence — weekly classes, monthly specials, repeating flash sales — where the timer should reset and run again.
Can I match the timer to my brand?
Yes. Customize colors, fonts, the expiry image, and the time-display format from the styling controls.
