WhatsApp Contact Validation and Smartlists in Sparkforge

The Valid WhatsApp field tags every contact as Valid, Invalid, or Not Validated based on real send and receive activity. Filter on it to build a smartlist of deliverable numbers for your WhatsApp campaigns.

Sending WhatsApp messages to numbers that aren't on WhatsApp wastes spend and tanks your delivery rate. The Valid WhatsApp field tracks the WhatsApp status of every contact so you can filter to deliverable numbers before you press send.

The Valid WhatsApp field

Every contact carries one of three statuses:

  • Is Valid — the number is active on WhatsApp. Messages will deliver.
  • Is Invalid — the number isn't on WhatsApp. Messages will fail.
  • Is Not Validated — the system hasn't confirmed yet. Send activity will resolve it.

How the status updates

  • Successful delivery — marks the contact Is Valid.
  • Delivery failure or Meta error — marks the contact Is Invalid.
  • Inbound WhatsApp message — marks the contact Is Valid in real time.
  • No conversation history — stays in Not Validated until something happens.

Add the column to your contacts page

  1. Go to Contacts.
  2. Click Columns.
  3. Select Valid WhatsApp.

Build a smartlist that excludes invalid numbers

  1. Go to Contacts and click More Filters.
  2. Search for Valid WhatsApp.
  3. Select Is Valid and click Apply.
  4. Add an OR condition and select Is Not Validated.
  5. Click Save as Smart List and name it.

Including Is Not Validated matters: those contacts haven't been confirmed but might be on WhatsApp. Excluding them shrinks your reach unnecessarily, since the system simply hasn't seen activity yet to validate them.

The smartlist updates dynamically. As contacts move into Valid or Invalid based on real send activity, the list adjusts automatically. Use it to send WhatsApp campaigns with much higher delivery confidence.

Why it matters

  • Stops wasted sends to non-WhatsApp numbers
  • Improves your delivery rate, which affects sender reputation with Meta
  • Surfaces unvalidated numbers worth confirming before a big campaign

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does the Valid WhatsApp field update?
In real time. Every send, delivery failure, or inbound WhatsApp message updates the status immediately.
Can I manually mark a contact as Valid or Invalid?
No. The status is system-driven based on real send and receive activity. That's by design — manual overrides would defeat the deliverability signal.
Why include Is Not Validated in my smartlist?
Those contacts may well be on WhatsApp — the system just hasn't seen activity yet to confirm. Excluding them shrinks your reach for no good reason.
What happens to a contact that fails delivery once?
It flips to Is Invalid. If the contact later replies on WhatsApp, the system instantly flips it back to Is Valid.
Can I use this filter inside automation workflows?
Yes. Filter on Valid WhatsApp inside workflow conditions to gate WhatsApp send actions to only deliverable numbers.
