How to Use a Countdown Timer in Sparkforge Emails
Countdown timers in Sparkforge emails render as GIFs that refresh on each open and tick for up to 60 seconds. Apple Mail caches the GIF, so the timer may freeze on subsequent opens.
Countdown timers in Sparkforge emails count down to a deadline to drive urgency and faster action.
Why use one in email
- Visual interest. A live timer pulls attention.
- Urgency. Recipients act before the clock hits zero.
How email countdown timers work
Email timers render as GIFs:
- Refresh on open. When the recipient opens the email, the timer pulls the current state and counts down for up to 60 seconds.
- Example. A timer set to end at midnight December 25th, opened on December 24th, displays "24 hours left" and ticks down to "23 hours 59 minutes left" before stopping. The next open re-fetches the latest timestamp and ticks for another 60 seconds.
- Why 60 seconds. Balances email file size with perceived liveness — most recipients close before the GIF would finish.
Apple Mail caching
Apple Mail caches GIFs aggressively. A recipient who opens the same email more than once may see the timer frozen on subsequent opens because Apple Mail serves the cached image instead of refreshing it. This is a known client-level limitation, not a Sparkforge bug.
Add a countdown timer to an email
- Create the timer. Go to Marketing > Countdown Timer and configure it.
- Open the email template. Go to Email Marketing and open or create a campaign.
- Insert the timer element into the email.
- Pick the timer from your saved timers — preview design and details.
- Adjust alignment in the timer settings.
- Customize background color and padding.
- Configure redirection. Copy the redirect link and use it on your CTA buttons.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the timer stop ticking after a few seconds?
Email timers are GIFs that tick for up to 60 seconds per open to keep file size reasonable. Reopening the email refreshes the GIF and resumes from the latest timestamp.
Why does the timer freeze in Apple Mail?
Apple Mail caches GIFs, so the same image is served on subsequent opens. The countdown appears to stop. This is a client behavior outside Sparkforge's control.
Can I link the timer to a specific URL?
Yes. Use the redirect link from the timer settings on your CTA button so clicks go to the active offer page (and to the expired page after the timer ends).
Does the timer keep counting if the email is open for an hour?
No. It ticks for up to 60 seconds per open and then displays the latest snapshot. Closing and reopening refreshes it.
