How to Use Trigger Links in WhatsApp Templates in Sparkforge
Trigger Links in WhatsApp Templates let you place tracked buttons or inline links in WhatsApp V2 messages. Sparkforge records the click so workflows can branch on intent and follow up automatically.
Trigger Link support in WhatsApp Templates lets you put tracked, automation-ready CTAs into your WhatsApp V2 messages. When a contact taps the link, Sparkforge records the click so workflows can branch immediately, send the right follow-up, set tags, or update fields, just like Trigger Links in email and SMS.
What It Does
- Click-level attribution: See exactly which CTA each contact tapped.
- Workflow branching: Use the Trigger Link Clicked trigger to route contacts down different paths.
- A/B testing: Swap labels or destinations on tracked buttons to find what converts.
- Tag-based handoffs: Apply tags or update fields on click so sales and service know what the contact wants.
- No extra tools: Tracking is native to Sparkforge. No third-party shortener required.
Two Ways to Add a Trigger Link
- Trigger Link Button (recommended): Add a button to the template, set its type to Trigger Link, and map it to your link.
- Inline Trigger Link: Insert a variable in the body text and map it to a Trigger Link so the link appears inline in the message.
Prerequisites
- Active WhatsApp connection through Sparkforge with Meta onboarding complete.
- Sub-account permission to create Templates and edit Workflows.
- One or more Trigger Links already created under Marketing → Trigger Links → Links.
- An approved or approvable WhatsApp V2 template with category, sample content, and variables filled in.
Button Limits and Design Guidelines
- Total buttons per message must be 2 or fewer (Trigger Link buttons plus normal buttons combined).
- Stick to one or two focused CTAs to reduce choice overload.
- Use descriptive labels that map cleanly to workflow branches ("See Pricing," "Book Pickup").
- Provide sample content for variables during template creation to help Meta approval go through.
- If you plan to send a follow-up template later (no reply yet), get that one approved in advance.
Setup Steps
Step 1: Create a Trigger Link
- Open Marketing → Trigger Links → Links.
- Click Add Link, give it a name (e.g., "20% Off Introductory Offer"), and paste the destination URL.
- Click Save.
Step 2: Create a WhatsApp Template with a Trigger Link
- Open the WhatsApp V2 template editor and create a new template.
- Add a button, set its type to Trigger Link, and select the Trigger Link you just created. Or, insert a variable in the body and map it to the Trigger Link for an inline CTA.
- Fill in sample content for variables and submit for Meta approval.
Step 3: Send and Branch in a Workflow
- Build a workflow that sends the WhatsApp template via the WhatsApp V2 sending action.
- Add a wait step, then a Trigger Link Clicked branch.
- Configure the click branch to send a follow-up template, apply a tag, update a field, or notify a user.
- Test with a small audience before broadcasting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this work with the original WhatsApp action?
Trigger Link tracking is supported on the WhatsApp V2 sending action inside Workflows. Older WhatsApp actions do not record the click for branching.
How many Trigger Link buttons can a template have?
Each WhatsApp message is capped at two buttons total, including Trigger Link buttons and normal buttons combined. Most templates do best with one focused CTA.
Can I use the same Trigger Link in email, SMS, and WhatsApp?
Yes. Trigger Links are a shared resource across channels, so you can reuse one link and branch workflows on the click event regardless of channel.
Will Meta approve a template with a Trigger Link button?
Yes, as long as the button label is clear and the template category and sample content are filled in correctly. Avoid promotional copy in transactional templates.
How do I A/B test buttons?
Create two templates with different button labels (or different Trigger Link destinations), split your audience in the workflow, and compare click-through rates from the Trigger Link reports.
