Fix Duplicate Contacts for WhatsApp Messages in Sparkforge

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

If WhatsApp messages keep creating duplicate contacts even with “Allow Duplicate Contact” disabled, set Phone as the secondary search preference under Business Profile so the system matches on phone number.

WhatsApp messages can still create duplicate contacts even when Allow Duplicate Contact is disabled in your Business Profile. The cause is usually a missing secondary search preference — the system has nothing to match on when the inbound number doesn’t exactly line up with an existing contact’s primary identifier.

Symptoms

  • Duplicate contacts appear for WhatsApp messages.
  • Allow Duplicate Contact is already off in Business Profile settings.
  • Duplicates keep being created anyway.

Cause

Contact search preferences don’t include phone number as a secondary match criterion. Without a phone-based fallback, an inbound WhatsApp message can’t be tied back to an existing contact and a new record is created.

Resolution

  1. Go to Business Profile.
  2. Open Contact Duplicate Preference.
  3. Under Second Preference for Search (Optional), select Phone.

With phone added as a secondary preference, the system can match inbound WhatsApp messages by number and stop creating duplicate records.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are duplicate contacts created even when 'Allow Duplicate Contact' is off?
The duplicate-prevention check needs a search criterion to compare against. If phone isn’t set as a secondary search preference, inbound WhatsApp messages may not match an existing contact and a new one is created.
Where do I change the secondary search preference?
Business Profile → Contact Duplicate Preference → Second Preference for Search (Optional). Set this to Phone.
Will this also help with duplicate contacts from SMS or calls?
Yes. Adding phone as a secondary match criterion improves contact matching across any channel that uses a phone number.
