Convert a WhatsApp Marketing Template to Utility
WhatsApp does not allow direct category changes from Marketing to Utility. Use Sparkforge's Template Rewriter to revise the content and submit a new Utility template under a different name.
WhatsApp categorizes message templates as Marketing, Utility, or Authentication. Each category has different delivery rules, costs, and opt-out handling. Once a template is approved, the category is locked.
You can't change the category directly
If you need a Utility version of a template that's already approved as Marketing, WhatsApp requires you to revise and resubmit. The Template Rewriter inside Sparkforge handles the revision flow.
How the rewrite works
- Open the template in Sparkforge and start the rewrite.
- Adjust the content so it fits Utility criteria — transactional, account-related, or service-update messaging rather than promotional.
- Submit the revised template under a new name. The original Marketing-approved name can't be reused.
- Wait for Meta to approve. Most reviews finish within 24–48 hours.
If Meta rejects the rewrite
Sometimes Meta declines a Template Rewriter submission. When that happens, you have to manually create a new template in WhatsApp Manager and rewrite the content from scratch to match Utility guidelines. Check the rejection reason in your WhatsApp template dashboard before resubmitting.
Why bother converting?
Utility templates that fall inside the 24-hour customer service window are often free, and they bypass the opt-out restrictions that apply to Marketing messages. For high-volume transactional flows, the savings add up fast.
