How to Configure International Automatic Taxes in Sparkforge
International Automatic Taxes calculates VAT and local taxes at checkout based on the customer’s address and your nexus locations. Set it up once in Payments → Settings → Taxes and it applies across Funnels, Payment Links, Invoices, Estimates, and Stores.
International Automatic Taxes applies VAT and local taxes at checkout based on the customer’s address and the nexus locations you register. It works across Funnels, Payment Links, Invoices, Estimates, and Ecommerce stores, with every supported payment provider.
Compliance is your responsibility. Sparkforge calculates the tax; you confirm you are obligated to collect and remit in each jurisdiction.
Step 1: Open tax settings
- From the left menu, click Payments.
- Open the Settings tab.
- Select the Taxes sub-tab.
Step 2: Decide whether tax is included in price
Find Include Tax in Prices and pick one:
- Yes – The displayed price is the final total. Tax is calculated inside that figure. A $100 product at 10% tax stays $100, with $9.10 reported as tax.
- No – Tax is added on top. A $100 product at 10% tax becomes $110 at checkout.
Step 3: Turn on automatic tax
Scroll to the Automatic Taxes section and toggle Enable automatic tax on.
Step 4: Pick a default tax category (optional)
Choose a default tax category that fits the bulk of your products. Per-product tax codes override the default.
Step 5: Add nexus addresses
- Click Add Nexus Address.
- Choose a country. United States expands into 58 states; Canada into 13 provinces and territories. Other countries are country-level only.
- Enter your Tax ID for the jurisdiction if local rules require it. Optional.
- Click Add.
Deleting a country with sub-jurisdictions (like Canada) also removes its provinces. Countries are deleted one at a time.
Step 6: Confirm tax at checkout
After setup, taxes are added automatically based on the customer’s billing or shipping address. The applied tax appears as a separate line item on the receipt or invoice.
Set product-level tax codes
- Open Payments > Products.
- Create a product or edit an existing one from the three-dot menu.
- Scroll to Product Tax Code.
- Pick a tax category for that product.
- Under Include taxes in prices, choose As per global settings, Yes, or No.
- Save.
Migrate from US-only Auto Tax
Accounts that used the US-only system migrate through the same settings page.
- Go to Payments > Settings > Taxes.
- Scroll to Automatic Taxes and click Reconfigure.
- Read the migration guidelines and click Confirm.
The legacy US-only tax system is deprecated. Accounts that did not migrate before September 1, 2025 had automatic tax disabled until reconnected.
Maintain nexus addresses
Update the nexus list as your business grows or contracts. Stale entries can lead to over-collection in jurisdictions where you no longer have an obligation.
