Fix "This Number is Registered to an Existing WhatsApp Account"
WhatsApp lets a number live on only one account at a time. Delete it from the existing WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app, wait up to a few minutes for release, then retry onboarding inside Sparkforge.
This error appears during WhatsApp onboarding when the phone number you are trying to register is already linked to another WhatsApp account. WhatsApp only allows a number to be active on one account at a time, so the number must be fully released before you can connect it to Sparkforge.
Why this happens
- The number is currently active on the WhatsApp consumer app.
- The number is linked to a WhatsApp Business app.
- The number was used previously and never properly deleted.
- The number was recently migrated and is still in WhatsApp's cooldown period.
Step 1: Remove the number from the existing account
On the device where the number is currently active:
- Open WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business.
- Go to Settings → Account.
- Select Delete my account.
- Confirm the phone number and complete the deletion.
Important: Uninstalling the app is not enough. The account has to be deleted from WhatsApp settings.
Step 2: Wait for WhatsApp to release the number
- Wait up to 3 minutes for WhatsApp to release the number.
- Some cases take longer depending on WhatsApp's systems.
Step 3: Retry onboarding
- Return to the Sparkforge onboarding page.
- Re-enter the phone number.
- Request and verify the OTP again.
If the error persists
- Make sure the number is not active on any other device.
- Confirm the number is not tied to another Meta Business Manager or WhatsApp Business Account.
- Wait 10–15 minutes if the number was recently deleted, then retry.
- If it still fails, contact support with the phone number (with country code), a screenshot of the error, and the Business Manager ID if you have one.
Avoid this in the future
- Use a new or unused phone number for WhatsApp onboarding when possible.
- Avoid reusing numbers recently connected to WhatsApp.
- Do not start onboarding while the number is still active elsewhere.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will uninstalling WhatsApp release the number?
No. Uninstalling does not delete the WhatsApp account. You must open the app and delete the account from Settings, then wait for the number to release.
How long do I have to wait before retrying onboarding?
Usually up to 3 minutes, but some releases take 10-15 minutes. Wait the longer window before contacting support.
Can I onboard a number that is on WhatsApp Business?
Only after the WhatsApp Business account using that number is fully deleted from WhatsApp settings.
What if the same error appears after waiting?
Confirm the number is not active on any device or tied to another Meta Business Manager. If the issue continues, contact support with the number, a screenshot, and your Business Manager ID.
