AND/OR Filters in Sparkforge Smart Lists

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

Sparkforge Smart Lists support AND, OR, and combined AND/OR filter groups. Use AND when every condition must be true, OR when any one is enough, and group AND blocks under OR for finer segmentation.

Smart Lists in Sparkforge let you filter contacts three ways: AND, OR, and AND/OR combined. Pick the one that matches the question you're asking.

AND condition

Every condition must be true for a contact to appear in the list.

Example: contacts who have a specific tag and an email and a phone number.

OR condition

At least one condition must be true.

Example: contacts who have an email or a phone number or a specific tag.

AND and OR combined

Group AND filters together, then connect groups with OR for finer segmentation.

Example: contacts with both an email and phone, or contacts with just a mailing address.

Operator availability

Operators like IS, IS NOT, IS EMPTY, IS NOT EMPTY, CONTAINS, and DOES NOT CONTAIN aren't available on every field yet. If an operator is missing, the field doesn't support it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I nest more than two levels of AND/OR groups?

No. You can group AND filters and combine them with OR, but deeper nesting isn't supported in the Smart List builder.

Why can't I use CONTAINS on some fields?

Operator support varies by field type. Date fields, dropdowns, and custom fields each expose different operators based on the data they hold.

Do filter changes apply retroactively?

Yes. Smart Lists evaluate filters in real time, so any contact that now matches the new criteria appears immediately.
