How to Set Up Manual Taxes for Rentals in Sparkforge

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

Sparkforge applies taxes to rental bookings through the product linked to each listing in Payments. Configure the manual tax once and it applies to future bookings. Variants get their own linked product, so each variant can use a different tax rate. Security deposits aren't taxed.

Rental businesses need transparent totals at checkout. Sparkforge handles rental taxes by linking each listing to a product in Payments, then applying that product's manual tax rate to future bookings. Set it once per listing — or per variant — and totals stay aligned with what customers should pay.

How Rental Taxes Work

Each rental listing is tied to a product in Payments > Products. Tax setup happens on that linked product, not on pricing or seasonal rules. Once configured, the tax applies to future bookings automatically. Rentals currently supports manual taxes only.

Why Configure It This Way

  • Manual control: Set the rate that matches your jurisdiction.
  • Transparent pricing: Customers see accurate totals at booking.
  • Variant flexibility: Each variant links to its own product, so each can carry its own tax rate.
  • Operational efficiency: No manual calculations or workarounds in booking management.
  • Better reporting: Taxes appear in totals, invoices, and supported reporting views.

Setup Steps

  1. Go to Calendars > Calendar Settings > Rentals > Listings and open the listing.
  2. Click Edit Listing.
  3. Open Inventory & Pricing.
  4. Click Configure tax for this listing. Sparkforge redirects to the linked product in Payments > Products.
  5. Add or update the manual tax on the linked product. Click Save.
  6. Create a new booking or open a future booking total to confirm the tax is applied.

Setup Notes

  • Manual taxes only — automatic taxes are not supported for Rentals.
  • Tax setup lives on the linked product, not in pricing discounts or seasonal pricing rules.
  • If a listing has variants, repeat the setup for each variant that needs its own rate.
  • Taxes do not apply to the security deposit.
