How to Set Up Unsubscribe Links in Sparkforge Email
Sparkforge Email adds an unsubscribe link to every send by default. You can customize it, place it manually with the {{unsubscribe}} tag, or replace it with a custom link — but you can't ship marketing email without one.
Every marketing email Sparkforge sends includes an unsubscribe link. CAN-SPAM in the U.S. and GDPR in the EU require it, and Sparkforge adds one to the footer by default. You can customize the wording, move it manually with a tag, or build a fully custom unsubscribe page — but you can't legally remove it.
Why Unsubscribe Links Are Required
- CAN-SPAM (U.S.) — every commercial email needs a clear way to opt out.
- GDPR (EU) — Article 17, the right to erasure, lets contacts request deletion. Unsubscribing is one way they exercise that right. GDPR fines can hit €20M or 4% of global revenue.
Compliance aside, an unsubscribe link keeps your list engaged, your sender reputation clean, and your account out of suspension territory.
Enable or Disable the Default Unsubscribe Link
- Open Sub-account Settings → Business Profile.
- Scroll to the General tab.
- Toggle Include Unsubscribe Link on or off.
- Customize the link text or destination if you want a non-default experience.
If you turn the default off, you must drop the {{unsubscribe}} tag into every email yourself — there's no way to legally send without one.
Manually Place the Unsubscribe Link
For full control over placement, use the tag:
- Open the Sparkforge Email Builder — in conversations, a campaign, or an email template.
- Put the cursor where you want the link.
- Type or paste
{{unsubscribe}}. The custom valueUNSUBSCRIBE LINKunder EMAIL also works.
When the email sends, the tag becomes a real clickable opt-out link.
What Happens If You Use Both
If the default footer link is on and you've placed the manual tag, both render. Two links in one email looks cluttered, can confuse recipients, and may hurt clicks. Pick one approach per email:
- Want precise placement? Turn the default off and place
{{unsubscribe}}manually. - Want zero overhead? Leave the default on and don't include the tag.
