How to Make Groups Private in Sparkforge Communities
Private groups in Sparkforge Communities restrict access to approved members. Owners and admins create them, manage requests, and can toggle public or private at any time.
Private groups give you a controlled space inside Sparkforge Communities. Only approved members see content, and owners or admins manage who gets in.
Roles and Permissions
| Role | What they can do |
|---|---|
| Owner | Group creator. Assigns admins and contributors, toggles public/private, approves requests. Cannot be reassigned. |
| Admin | Assigns roles, toggles public/private, approves requests, changes contributor and admin roles. |
| Contributor | Posts and participates. No control over settings or membership. |
When to Use Private Groups
- Confidential discussions or sensitive projects.
- Focused team collaboration without outside noise.
- Approval-gated membership where you screen who joins.
- Paid or exclusive cohorts where access controls revenue.
Create a Group
- Open
Memberships, then the Communities tab. - Click + Create Group.
- Name the group, set branding and appearance, and click Create Group.
Convert a Group to Private
- Open the group and go to Settings.
- Under Details, toggle Switch to Private.
- Click Save.
Switching public to private restricts existing content to current members. Switching private to public auto-approves all pending requests.
Membership Workflow
Request to join
Prospective members visit the group URL and click Request to join. The button changes to Membership Pending.
Approve or reject
Owners and admins review pending requests under Members > Requested. Approved members get an email with a magic link for one-tap access.
Adjust roles
From the members list, assign admin or contributor roles. The owner role cannot be reassigned.
Visibility for Non-Members
Under group settings, the Accessible switcher controls whether users in your sub-account who belong to other groups can see this one in the group switcher. Turn it off to hide the group entirely from non-members.
