Fix the Google Calendar Writer Access Error in Sparkforge

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

The "writer access" error means the Google account synced to Sparkforge isn't allowed to edit the target Google Calendar. The calendar owner must add that account with "Make changes to events" permission in Google Calendar's sharing settings.

If Sparkforge shows this error when syncing a calendar:

You need to have writer access to sync appointments to the selected Google Calendar. Please check with the Google Calendar owner in case syncing is required.

The Google account synced to Sparkforge doesn't have edit permission on the calendar you're trying to use. The fix is to grant that account writer access in Google Calendar.

Fix the error

  1. The owner of the Google Calendar logs in to Google and goes to calendar.google.com.
  2. Hover over the calendar in the left sidebar, click the three-dot icon, and select Settings and sharing.
  3. Scroll to Share with specific people and click Add people.
  4. Add the email address of the Google account synced to Sparkforge.
  5. Set the permission to Make changes to events.
  6. Click Send to save and notify the account.

The Google Calendar will sync with Sparkforge after the permission is accepted. This applies to both group calendars and unassigned calendars.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which permission level does Sparkforge need?
Make changes to events. View-only or free/busy access isn't enough — Sparkforge needs to write appointments.
Does the calendar owner need to approve the permission?
The owner sets the permission. The synced Google account receives a notification but doesn't need to accept anything additional.
Why does this error appear on group and unassigned calendars?
Both calendar types route appointments to Google Calendar. If the synced account can't write to the destination calendar, the sync fails.
Will existing appointments sync once permission is granted?
New appointments sync immediately. Existing appointments may take a few minutes to backfill.
