Automatic Tax Category IDs and Names in Sparkforge

Sparkforge applies tax with Automatic Tax Category IDs and Names. You assign a Tax Category Name in the UI; the platform stores the matching Category ID and uses it with your nexus addresses to calculate the correct rate per transaction.

Automatic Tax in Sparkforge calculates the right rate on every product, service, and subscription using a two-part system: a human-readable Tax Category Name in the UI and a unique Tax Category ID on the backend. Assigning the correct category is what keeps tax accurate across regions.

How Tax Categories Work

  • Assignment: When you create or edit a product, subscription, or sub-account default, choose a Tax Category Name from the picker.
  • Calculation: Sparkforge resolves the Category Name to its Category ID and applies the correct tax rate based on the customer location and your configured nexus addresses.
  • API use: When you create products through the API, send the Category ID (or matching Category Name) so the calculation engine has what it needs.

Where to Assign a Tax Category

  1. Open Payments → Products and edit the product (or open Settings → Tax for sub-account defaults).
  2. Select the appropriate Tax Category Name from the dropdown. The picker is searchable.
  3. Save. Future invoices, subscriptions, and checkouts will use the new category for tax calculation.

Picking the Right Category

Categories are granular on purpose: prepared food intended for immediate consumption is taxed differently than groceries; veterinary drugs vary by whether a vet administers them; clothing splits by item type and end customer. Match the category to what you actually sell, not the closest generic option.

Non-Taxable Items

For exempt or non-taxable items, choose the Non-Taxable Product category. That stops tax from being applied while still keeping the item categorized for reporting.

Looking Up a Category ID

The full Category ID and Category Name list is maintained in the Sparkforge tax category reference. To pull a Category ID for an API integration, search the reference for the Category Name shown in the UI; the matching ID is the value to send. Each category also maps to a corresponding Avalara tax code so reporting stays consistent across systems.

Maintenance

  • Review your category assignments any time you launch a new product line.
  • Tax law changes: revisit categories that touch regulated items (food, pharma, services with split rates) at least once a year.
  • If you sell into new states or countries, confirm your nexus addresses are configured before relying on automatic calculation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Tax Category Name and a Tax Category ID?
The Name is the human-readable label you pick in the UI. The ID is the unique backend identifier Sparkforge uses for calculation, reporting, and API calls. Each Name maps to exactly one ID.
Where do I assign a tax category to a product?
Open Payments → Products, edit the product, and choose a Tax Category Name from the dropdown. Sub-account defaults are set under Settings → Tax.
What if my product is not taxable?
Select the Non-Taxable Product category. That stops tax from being applied while keeping the product properly categorized for reporting.
How does Sparkforge know which rate to apply?
It combines the Tax Category ID with the customer location and your configured nexus addresses, then resolves the correct rate. Avalara tax codes back the underlying calculation.
Can I set tax categories through the API?
Yes. Send the Category ID (or matching Category Name) on the product or subscription payload. The IDs and Names are local to Sparkforge.
