How to Set Up SendGrid as Your SMTP Provider in Sparkforge

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

To use SendGrid as your SMTP provider in Sparkforge, generate a Full Access API key in SendGrid, paste it into Email Services in your sub-account, then verify your sender identity to clear 550 errors.

SendGrid handles outbound email at scale and pairs cleanly with Sparkforge. Setup takes about five minutes once you have a SendGrid account and a verified sender address.

Step 1: Sign up for SendGrid

Create a free SendGrid account at signup.sendgrid.com.

Step 2: Add the email service in Sparkforge

Inside your sub-account, go to Settings > Email Services > Add Service and select SendGrid from the dropdown.

To configure SendGrid for every sub-account at once, do this from the agency view at /settings/email_services.

Step 3: Generate a SendGrid API key

  1. In SendGrid, go to Settings > API Keys.
  2. Click Create API Key.
  3. Name the key, set permissions to Full Access, and click Create & View.
  4. Copy the key — SendGrid only shows it once.

Step 4: Paste the API key into Sparkforge

Back in Sparkforge, fill in the SendGrid form:

  • Username: apikey (literal string)
  • Email: your SendGrid login email
  • Password: the API key you just copied

Click Save.

Step 5: Enable 2FA on SendGrid

SendGrid requires two-factor authentication for sender accounts. Enable it in your SendGrid security settings.

Step 6: Verify your sender identity

SendGrid will reject mail from unverified senders. In SendGrid, go to Sender Authentication > Single Sender Verification and verify the address you'll send from.

Step 7: Reconnect in Sparkforge

Click Save again on the SendGrid integration. SendGrid now appears as your active SMTP provider.

Fixing the 550 verified sender error

If a test email returns:

550 The from address does not match a verified Sender Identity.

Click the red triangle icon in the conversation for full error details. The fix:

  • Make sure the masked sender email matches the SMTP-integrated email, or
  • Verify the masked sender address in SendGrid as a single sender or via domain authentication.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SendGrid free with Sparkforge?
SendGrid has its own free tier (currently 100 emails/day). Sparkforge does not charge extra to use SendGrid as your SMTP provider, but SendGrid's own paid plans apply once you exceed their free limit.
Can I use the same SendGrid account across multiple sub-accounts?
Yes. Configure SendGrid at the agency level under Settings > Email Services and it propagates to every sub-account.
Why does the username have to be the literal word 'apikey'?
SendGrid's SMTP API requires the username field to be the string 'apikey' regardless of your account email. The API key itself goes in the password field.
Do I have to verify a domain or just a single sender?
Either works. Single Sender Verification is faster but locked to one address. Domain authentication takes a few DNS records but lets you send from any address on that domain and improves deliverability.
What happens if I lose the API key?
SendGrid only shows the key once. If you lose it, generate a new one in SendGrid and re-paste it into Sparkforge.
