Why Stripe Hides Payment Methods at Checkout

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

Stripe, not Sparkforge, decides which payment methods (Klarna, Afterpay, cards) appear at checkout. Visibility depends on account currency, payer location, transaction amount, and method eligibility for the payer's country.

If a payment method is enabled in Stripe and Sparkforge but doesn't appear at checkout, Stripe is deciding to hide it for that specific payment. Stripe's Payment Element adapts per payer and per transaction, so different customers see different methods.

Why a payment method might not appear

Stripe evaluates several conditions before showing a method:

  • Your Stripe account default currency.
  • Presentment currency (the currency of the product or invoice).
  • Payer location and IP address.
  • Eligibility and restrictions for the method on your account.
  • Transaction amount limits for that method.
  • Whether the method is supported in the payer's country or region.

How to check why a method is missing

Option 1: Use Stripe's troubleshooter

Stripe has a dedicated tool to debug missing payment methods. Search for "Stripe troubleshoot missing payment methods" in their support docs.

Option 2: Check method requirements in the Stripe dashboard

  1. Open the Stripe Dashboard.
  2. Go to Settings (top right gear icon).
  3. Under Product Settings, open Payments.
  4. Open the Payment Methods tab.
  5. Find the method your payer can't see and click View Details.

The detail panel shows the method's requirements and eligibility. Common reasons a method is hidden include mismatches in transaction amount limits, presentment currency support, customer location support, and global availability rules.

Example: for some accounts, Klarna only displays when the payer is in the USA or Puerto Rico and the checkout currency is USD.

What Sparkforge Payments controls

Stripe fully renders the checkout element and decides which payment methods appear. Sparkforge Payments controls only whether a payment method is globally enabled on the Sparkforge side.

If Stripe shows a message like "blocked by payments," the method isn't enabled in Sparkforge yet and may require Sparkforge support to enable it after internal testing. Even then, Sparkforge can't force Stripe to display a method, Stripe still decides based on payer and transaction eligibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Klarna or Afterpay disappear at checkout for some customers?
Stripe hides those methods when the payer's location, currency, or transaction amount doesn't match the method's eligibility rules. Klarna, for example, often requires USD checkouts for US-based payers.
Can Sparkforge force Stripe to show a specific payment method?
No. Stripe owns the checkout element and decides which methods to display. Sparkforge controls only whether a method is enabled on its side.
Where do I check why a method isn't showing?
Open the Stripe Dashboard, go to Settings, Product Settings, Payments, Payment Methods, find the method, and click View Details to see the eligibility requirements.
What does blocked by payments mean in Stripe?
It means the method isn't yet enabled on the Sparkforge Payments side. Contact Sparkforge support to enable it after internal testing. Stripe still decides whether to display it at checkout.
Why do different customers see different payment methods?
Stripe's Payment Element adapts per payer and per transaction, factoring in account currency, payer location, transaction amount, and method eligibility.
