How to Set Signing Order on Documents and Contracts

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

Toggle Signing Order on a document or contract to send signature requests one recipient at a time, in the order you set. Drag and drop to reorder. Leave it off and everyone gets the request at once.

Sparkforge documents and contracts support sequential signing. Turn on Signing Order to send signature requests in a defined sequence — useful when you need approvers to sign before clients, or vice versa.

What it does

  • Signing Order toggle — enable or disable per document.
  • Drag and drop — reorder recipients without retyping anything.
  • Sequential emails — with order on, each recipient gets the request only after the previous signer completes.
  • Simultaneous emails — with order off, every recipient gets the request at the same time.

Enable or disable signing order

  1. Open the document or contract you’re sending.
  2. Toggle Signing Order on or off.

Reorder recipients

  1. In the recipients list, click and hold a name.
  2. Drag it to the position you want.
  3. Release. The order saves immediately.

How emails fire

  • Order on: recipient 1 gets the request first. Once they sign, recipient 2 gets it. And so on.
  • Order off: all recipients get the request at the same moment.

Use sequential signing when approvals must happen in a specific order — internal sign-off before client signature, manager approval before staff acknowledgement, or any other compliance-driven flow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change the order after sending?
No. Set the signing order before sending. Once the document is out, you’d need to void and resend to change the sequence.
Does each signer see the previous signature?
Yes. By the time recipient N gets the request, the signatures from recipients 1 through N–1 are already on the document.
Can I mix sequential and simultaneous in one document?
No. Signing Order is on or off for the whole document. For mixed flows, send separate documents.
What happens if a signer in the middle of the sequence declines?
The chain stops. Subsequent recipients don’t receive the request until the issue is resolved or the document is resent.
Is signing order available on every plan?
Documents and Contracts are on plans that include CRM and automation. Signing Order ships with the Documents feature, no extra setup.
