How to Use Group SMS Chat in Sparkforge
Group Chat for SMS lets you message 2-9 contacts in a single Sparkforge thread on desktop and mobile. Participants and the From number are locked once the group is created.
Group Chat for SMS pulls multiple contacts into one Sparkforge thread instead of forcing you to juggle separate one-on-one conversations. Use it for families, internal teams, or any small group that needs to see the same messages.
Requirements
- Phone number: A Sparkforge number with SMS/MMS enabled.
- Region: All participants must have US or Canada numbers.
- Access: Users with assigned-data access can only create groups containing contacts assigned to them, and they need access to the From number to send.
Limits and behavior
- Group size: 2 to 9 participants.
- DND: Contacts on Do Not Disturb cannot be added. If anyone enables DND after creation, the thread is blocked. Spin up a new group without that contact to keep going.
- Immutable: You cannot add or remove participants, or change the From number after creation. Create a new group instead.
- Updated contacts: Messages keep routing to the original numbers even if a contact is later edited or deleted. Updated and Deleted tags appear next to affected contacts.
- Attachments: Images render inline; files appear as a downloadable chip. Carrier file-size limits apply.

Managing an active group chat
Group chats behave like one-on-one threads. Send messages, share images or files, and click the Chat Participants icon at the top to search the member list. Notifications fire on every new message, and every participant can see the full history.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I edit participants or change the From number after creating a group?
No. Both are locked once the group is created. Build a new group with the updated participants or number.
Do attachments work in Group Chat?
Yes. Images appear inline and files render as a downloadable chip. Carrier file-size limits still apply, so compress large files if delivery fails.
What happens if a participant turns on DND after the group is created?
The thread is blocked. Either have the contact opt back in or spin up a new group without them.
Can I run group chats from the mobile app?
Yes. You can create, view, and reply to group chats from the Sparkforge mobile apps on iOS and Android.
How big can a group chat be?
Two to nine participants. Above nine, use a workflow or bulk SMS instead.
