Contact Created Workflow Trigger in Sparkforge

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

The Contact Created trigger fires when a new contact is added — manually, by form, by API, or by integration. Use it to automate welcome emails, lead assignment, and CRM updates the moment a lead enters your system.

The Contact Created workflow trigger fires when a new contact lands in your CRM. It is the workhorse trigger for first-touch automation: welcome emails, lead routing, onboarding sequences, and any workflow that should run the moment a lead arrives.

What it does

The trigger activates regardless of how the contact is created — manually, via form submission, via API, or through an integration. Bulk imports are the one exception (see FAQ below).

What it is good for

  • Instant engagement — new contacts get a response without manual effort.
  • Lead routing — assign leads to reps based on filters.
  • Clean CRM data — auto-update fields and tags on creation.
  • Better customer experience — welcome emails and onboarding fire immediately.

How to set it up

  1. Go to Automations.
  2. Click + Create Workflow and pick Start from Scratch (or edit an existing workflow).
  3. Click Add New Workflow Trigger.
  4. Select Contact Created.
  5. Name the trigger (for example, "New Contact Welcome Sequence").
  6. Apply filters to narrow which contacts enter the workflow.

Available filters

Tag filter

Restrict the trigger to contacts that have (or do not have) specific tags. Operators support multi-select:

  • Equals to / Not equals to — exact match.
  • Any of — fires when any selected tag is present.
  • None of — fires when none of the selected tags are present.

Multiple Tag filters (AND logic)

Add more than one Tag filter on the same trigger to build inclusion/exclusion rules. Example: Tag Equals to "Lead" AND Tag Not equals to "Low Quality".

Custom Fields filter

If you have custom fields like "Industry Type", "Lead Score", or "Customer Category", filter the trigger to fire only when those fields meet your criteria. Useful for segmenting leads by business type, engagement level, or any other attribute you track.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this trigger fire for contacts I import in bulk?
No. Bulk imports skip the Contact Created trigger to prevent runaway automation. If you need workflows to run on imported contacts, use a separate workflow with manual enrollment.
Can I limit the trigger to specific contacts?
Yes. Use Tag filters and Custom Field filters to narrow it down. For example, only fire when a contact is tagged "New Lead" or when their Lead Score is above a threshold.
What if the same contact is added twice?
It depends on duplicate detection. If Sparkforge merges the new entry with an existing contact, the trigger does not fire again. If it treats the entry as a new contact, the workflow runs.
Can I auto-assign new contacts to team members?
Yes. Inside the workflow, use the Assign User action with round-robin or filter-based logic to distribute leads evenly across your team.
How do I track whether the workflow is working?
Open the workflow and review the execution log to see which contacts entered and what actions ran. For email actions, check open and click rates. For assignments, review follow-up completion rates.
