GPT Workflow Action in Sparkforge: Setup and Use Cases

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

The GPT workflow action drops AI-generated content into any Sparkforge workflow. Pick a model, write a prompt with dynamic variables, and pipe the output into email, SMS, or a custom field downstream.

The GPT workflow action lets a Sparkforge workflow call an OpenAI model mid-automation. You feed it a prompt, it returns text, and the next step in the workflow uses that text — in an email body, SMS, custom field, webhook payload, or wherever you need it.

What the GPT Action Does

It runs inside a workflow alongside any other action. Pair it with triggers like form submissions, abandoned checkouts, appointment status changes, payment received, or inbound webhooks. The output flows into later steps via the merge tag {{chatgpt.1.response}}.

Setup

  1. Open or create a workflow and add a trigger.
  2. Add the GPT powered by OpenAI action.
  3. Pick a Model. Default is GPT-5 Mini. Other options: GPT-5, GPT-5.1, GPT-5 Nano, GPT-4o, GPT-4 Turbo, GPT-4o Mini.
  4. Write your Prompt. Use merge fields like {{contact.first_name}} or {{message.body}} to personalize.
  5. Set Temperature (0.1–1). Lower = focused and predictable. Higher = creative and varied.
  6. Save and test with a real contact.

Where the Output Goes

After the GPT step runs, downstream actions can use {{chatgpt.1.response}} to:

  • Populate an email or SMS body
  • Save into a custom field on the contact
  • Send via webhook to an external system
  • Post to Slack or another internal channel

Sample Prompts

Reply to a Customer Message

Your name is {{user.name}}. You are a helpful, concise assistant. Write a reply email to {{contact.name}} from {{user.name}} for the message below.

{{message.body}}

Promote a Product

Write email body copy (no subject) promoting the product at YOUR_WEBSITE to {{contact.name}}, signed from {{user.name}}.

Common Use Cases

  • Missed-call follow-up — generate a contextual SMS apology and reschedule offer.
  • Abandoned cart — trigger off Shopify checkout abandonment, send a reminder email.
  • Webinar follow-up — after appointment status flips, email attendees a recap and next step.
  • Form auto-reply — acknowledge job applicants, leads, or RSVPs with a personalized response.
  • Post-purchase survey — thank the buyer and request feedback after payment received.
  • Onboarding — generate a welcome message after a new membership signup.

Practical Notes

AI output is not deterministic. Review samples before sending live. Lower the temperature when accuracy matters more than novelty. Keep prompts specific — vague prompts produce vague output.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I tune how creative the responses are?
Yes. Use the temperature setting (0.1 to 1). Lower values produce focused, predictable text. Higher values produce more varied, creative output.
What models are available?
GPT-5, GPT-5.1, GPT-5 Mini (default), GPT-5 Nano, GPT-4o, GPT-4 Turbo, and GPT-4o Mini.
How do I use the AI output in later workflow steps?
Reference it with the merge tag {{chatgpt.1.response}} in any downstream action — email body, SMS, custom field, webhook payload, etc.
Does the AI output go anywhere by default?
No. The action only generates text. Nothing is sent or saved unless a later step in the workflow uses {{chatgpt.1.response}}.
Can I use dynamic contact data in the prompt?
Yes. Insert any custom value or merge field (e.g., {{contact.first_name}}, {{event.notes}}) directly into the prompt to personalize the response.
