Workflow Action: Clear Fields of an Associated Record

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

The Clear Fields of Associated Record action wipes selected fields on a custom object record linked to a contact, while leaving the record intact. Good for redemption flows, resets, and clearing stale values.

The Clear Fields of an Associated Record workflow action resets selected fields on a custom object record linked to a contact. The record itself stays — only the chosen field values are wiped. Use it for loyalty redemptions, form resets, or any case where data needs to clear on a trigger.

What the action does

From a contact-based workflow, pick a custom object, narrow the records by association label, and choose which fields to blank out. The action does not delete the record or break the association.

Requirements

  • At least one custom object configured in the sub-account.
  • An association label defined between that object and contacts.
  • At least one record already linked to the contact running the workflow.

Configuration

  • Object to Update — the custom object holding the record.
  • Association Label — which records to target.
  • Fields to Clear — one or more fields to reset to empty.

Example: loyalty point redemption

A retail business uses a Loyalty Program custom object to track points per customer. When a customer redeems their points for a reward, the points balance and last redemption date need to reset on that record.

  1. Object to Update — Loyalty Program
  2. Association Label — Customer Rewards
  3. Fields to Clear:
    • Loyalty Points
    • Last Redemption Date

The workflow fires when a redemption request is processed, clears both fields, and prevents redeemed points from being reused. The loyalty record stays linked to the contact for ongoing tracking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this action delete the record?
No. Only the selected field values are reset to empty. The record itself, the association, and all other fields stay intact.
Can I clear multiple fields in one run?
Yes. Select as many fields as needed in the Fields to Clear list and the action will reset all of them in a single execution.
When should I use Clear Fields versus Update with empty values?
Clear Fields is purpose-built — it explicitly resets the chosen fields, which is clearer in audit trails and avoids ambiguity around blank values being treated as no-ops.
Does it work on every linked record at once?
Scope it by association label or by All associated records, the same way Update works. The action will clear the chosen fields on every record that matches.
