Trigger Workflows on Email Opens and Clicks in Sparkforge

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

Use the Email Events trigger inside any Sparkforge workflow to fire automations on opens or clicks. Add the trigger, then filter by Event type to choose Opened or Clicked.

What the Email Events trigger does

The Email Events trigger listens for engagement signals on emails sent from Sparkforge. Every time a contact opens or clicks, you can run a follow-up workflow based on that action.

Add the trigger to a workflow

  1. Open the workflow and click Add New Trigger. Search email to surface the email-related options.
  2. Select Email Events from the dropdown. This trigger type listens for opens, clicks, bounces, and other engagement signals.
  3. Click Add Filters to narrow which events fire the trigger.
  4. Pick Email Events → Event to expose the list of available event types.
  5. Choose Clicked or Opened. Save the trigger and the workflow enrolls any contact who performs that event.

Make tracking accurate

Open and Click tracking must be enabled on your sending domain. Without it, mailbox providers can't report engagement and the trigger won't fire reliably. Enable both events in your domain settings before you publish the workflow.

Layer filters for tighter targeting

After the Event filter, add filters like Campaign Name or Source so the trigger only fires for opens or clicks on the sends you care about. This keeps unrelated activity from kicking off the wrong follow-up.

Bot detection

Turn on Bot Detection Prevention in your Business Profile. Bot-driven opens and clicks get filtered out so your automations only run on real engagement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the Clicked and Opened events?
Opened fires when a recipient loads the tracking pixel in your email. Clicked fires when a recipient clicks any tracked link. Clicks are a stronger engagement signal because they require deliberate action.
Can I target an Email Event trigger to a specific campaign?
Yes. After adding the Event filter, layer filters like Campaign Name or Source so the trigger only fires for opens or clicks on the sends you care about.
Why isn't my Email Event trigger firing?
The most common cause is that Open and Click tracking is disabled on your sending domain. Re-enable tracking, confirm the workflow is published, and verify the filter matches the actual event type.
Will bot-generated opens or clicks trigger my workflow?
If Bot Detection Prevention is enabled in your Business Profile, bot-driven opens and clicks are filtered out and won't trigger the workflow.
