Why Parallax Backgrounds Don't Show on iPhone

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

This is an iOS Safari limitation, not a Sparkforge bug. Build a separate section that only shows on mobile and use any non-parallax background option there.

Parallax (fixed) background images don't render on iPhone or iPad. Mobile Safari on iOS blocks the JavaScript that drives the effect, so the image either disappears, sits static, or zooms incorrectly. Android phones and tablets, Chromebooks, Windows tablets, and desktop browsers handle it fine.

Why it happens

iOS Safari has long blocked fixed-attachment background images for performance and rendering reasons. Every web platform — Sparkforge included — runs into this same limit because it's enforced at the browser level, not at the page level.

Workaround in Sparkforge

Build a separate section that only renders on mobile and use a different background style there:

  1. Duplicate the section that uses the parallax background.
  2. Set the original to desktop only and the duplicate to mobile only.
  3. On the mobile section, swap the background type from Parallax to a static image, color, or gradient.

Visitors on iPhone get a clean mobile experience; desktop visitors still see the parallax effect.

What not to try

  • Custom CSS overrides won't bring fixed backgrounds back on iOS — the block is at the browser engine.
  • Switching to a video background introduces autoplay restrictions and bandwidth issues that are usually worse than the original problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a Sparkforge bug?
No. It's a limitation in iOS Safari that blocks the JavaScript needed for fixed background images. The same issue affects every other website platform.
Does parallax work on Android?
Yes. Parallax backgrounds render correctly on Android phones and tablets, Chromebooks, Windows tablets, and all desktop browsers.
Can I fix it with custom CSS?
No. The block is at the browser engine level, not the page level. CSS can't override it.
What's the cleanest workaround?
Duplicate the section, hide the original on mobile, hide the duplicate on desktop, and use a static background image on the mobile-only version.
