Coupon Code Applied Workflow Trigger in Sparkforge

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

The Coupon Code Applied trigger fires the instant a coupon is added at checkout, completed or not. Use it for abandoned-cart recovery, upsells, and real-time team alerts.

The Coupon Code Applied trigger fires the moment a customer drops a coupon into checkout — whether or not they finish the order. That makes it the right tool for abandoned-cart nudges, real-time sales alerts, and upsell sequences tied to specific promo codes.

How it differs from Coupon Code Redeemed

Applied fires on input. Redeemed fires only after a completed transaction. If you care about intent (someone tried to use the code), use Applied. If you care about realized revenue, use Redeemed.

Set up the trigger

  1. Go to Automation › Workflows and open or create a workflow.
  2. Click + Add New Trigger.
  3. Scroll to the Payments section and select Coupon Code Applied.
  4. Give the trigger a clear name (for example, 15% off applied — Product 1).
  5. Click + Add Filters to scope the trigger to specific codes, products, or order values.
  6. Save the trigger, build the actions, run Test Workflow, then Publish.

Actions worth pairing with this trigger

  • Send Email — acknowledge the coupon and reinforce the offer.
  • Add Tag — segment customers by which promo they responded to.
  • Internal Notification — alert sales when high-value codes are used.
  • Assign to User — route the contact to a closer.
  • Create/Update Opportunity — push the lead into your pipeline.

Common pattern: abandoned-cart recovery

Fire on Coupon Code Applied, wait 30 minutes, check whether the order completed, then send an SMS reminder with the same code if it didn't. The trigger gives you the entry signal to build that branch on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this trigger fire if the order isn't completed?
Yes. Coupon Code Applied fires on input, regardless of whether checkout finishes. That's what makes it useful for abandoned-cart recovery.
Can I narrow by product?
Yes. Use the Product(s) in Order or Product Collection filter to restrict the trigger to specific items.
What if I don't add filters?
The workflow will fire for every coupon applied at checkout. Add a Coupon Code or Coupon Type filter to scope to a single campaign.
Can I gate on order value?
Yes. The Order Value (Before Discount) filter supports Greater Than, Less Than, and equality operators.
Does this work with scheduled orders?
No. The trigger only fires when a coupon is actively applied at checkout, not on subscription renewals or scheduled orders.
