Auto-Create and Associate Companies from Contact Business Names

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

Turn on Contact Business Name automation under Settings > Objects > Companies. Sparkforge then uses the Business Name field on every contact to create and link company records, both during CSV imports and on every contact update.

Contacts and Companies import separately, but you can still create and associate them automatically using the Contact Business Name automation.

What it does

Contact Business Name automation creates and associates company records based on the Business Name field on contact records. With it on, Sparkforge uses the Business Name value to decide whether to create a new company or update an existing one. No manual company creation, no manual association.

It runs whenever a contact is created or updated, including bulk imports. For imports, the Business Name column in the CSV triggers the automation. It also works retroactively for existing contacts that already have a Business Name value.

Scenarios it covers

  • Contacts exist + Companies exist (not yet associated).
  • Contacts exist + Companies do not.
  • Neither Contacts nor Companies exist.
  • Companies exist + Contacts do not.

Why use it

  • Automatic company creation — companies are created from the Business Name field with no manual setup.
  • Built-in association — contacts get linked to the right company at the time of creation or update.
  • Bulk and ongoing updates — works for initial CSV imports and ongoing changes.
  • Consistent data — using one source field reduces duplicates and mismatches.
  • Less manual work — no more linking contacts to companies one at a time.

Enable the automation

  1. In the sub-account, go to Settings.
  2. Open Objects.
  3. Open the Companies standard object.
  4. Enable the option to automatically create and associate companies from contact business names.
  5. Save.

The setting is per sub-account. Saving is required for the automation to take effect.

Prepare the CSV file

  • Include a column named exactly Business Name. Other contact fields can be added as needed.
  • No company-specific columns are required.

Run the import

  1. Open Contacts and click Import.
  2. On the import start screen, select Contacts as the import object. The automation runs only on contact create or update events.
  3. Upload the CSV file.
  4. Choose Create and update contacts so the automation applies to both new contacts and existing contacts with a Business Name value.
  5. Map the Business Name column from the CSV to the Business Name field on the Contact object. Mapping is critical — incorrect mapping breaks the automation.
  6. Run the import.

What you get

During the import, Sparkforge reads the Business Name on each contact, creates or updates the company record as needed, and associates each contact with the correct company.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I enable Contact Business Name automation?
Settings > Objects > Companies in the sub-account. Toggle the option to create and associate companies from contact business names, then save.
Does it work for contacts I already have?
Yes. It applies retroactively to existing contacts that already have a Business Name value the next time those contacts are updated.
What if the Business Name column is named differently in my CSV?
The column name does not have to match exactly in the file as long as you map it to the Business Name field during the import field-mapping step. The mapping is what triggers the automation.
Will this create duplicate companies?
Sparkforge matches on the Business Name value, so identical names link to the same company. Subtle differences (extra spaces, abbreviations, punctuation) can still create separate records, so clean your data first.
