How to Use the Split Workflow Action in Sparkforge

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

The Split action randomly distributes contacts across up to five workflow paths using percentages that must total 100%. Use it for A/B tests, lead routing, and campaign experiments.

The Split action sends contacts down different paths in a workflow based on percentage weights. It is the right tool for A/B testing, distributing leads across reps, and running controlled experiments inside an automation.

What Split does (and does not) do

Split has one distribution type: random. It cannot route by criteria like order size — for that, use the If/Else action. Once a contact is assigned to a path they stay on it. Re-entering the same Split keeps them on their original path.

Set up the Split action

  1. In the Workflow Builder, click + and choose Internal > Split.
  2. Select Random Split as the Distribution Type (the only option).
  3. Add up to five paths, rename them, and set each path's percentage.
  4. Confirm the path weights total 100%. Anything else throws an error and blocks save.
  5. Optionally set one or more paths to 0% — they receive no contacts but still let you keep the structure intact.
  6. Save the action.

Track results

Open the action's Statistics tab to see how many contacts went down each path and the running total. Use this view to spot winning variants in tests.

Common use cases

  • A/B testing: 50% of contacts get headline A, 50% headline B in an email or SMS.
  • Lead routing: Send 75% of new leads to your senior rep and 25% to a rep in training.
  • Campaign optimization: Run variant offers and feed the winners back into your standard flow.
  • Support routing: Distribute tickets across teams or agents.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my percentages don't add up to 100%?
Sparkforge blocks save until they do. Adjust the path weights so the total equals 100%.
Can I change the split after the workflow is running?
Yes. Edits apply only to contacts who enter the workflow after the change. Existing contacts stay on their original path.
How many paths can a single Split action have?
Up to five paths.
Are contacts locked into their assigned path?
Yes. If they re-enter the same Split, they go down the same path they were originally assigned to.
Can I see real-time stats per path?
Yes. Open the Statistics tab on the action or enable Stats View in the Workflow Builder.
