Why Your Business Name Doesn't Show After CNAM Registration
CNAM (Caller ID Name) registration in Sparkforge tells one of several U.S. carrier databases to display your business name on outbound calls. Coverage is fragmented, so it shows reliably on fewer than 20% of calls — mostly landlines, rarely mobile.
CNAM lets the receiving carrier show your business name next to your phone number on outbound calls. In Sparkforge you register once under Settings > Phone Numbers > Trust Center > CNAM (Voice). The catch: U.S. CNAM coverage is patchy, so even a clean registration only displays on a fraction of calls.
What CNAM actually is
CNAM (Caller Name Presentation) is a 1990s-era system that shows a business or personal name alongside the caller's number. Instead of seeing +1 (555) 123-4567, your customer sees XYZ Company. That extra trust signal can lift answer rates, but CNAM does not stop spam labeling.
How CNAM works on the carrier side
When you place a call, only your number travels with the signal. The recipient's carrier then queries one of several decentralized CNAM databases to resolve a name. Because those databases are fragmented and managed independently, the same number can return different names — or no name at all — depending on which database the recipient's carrier uses.
Register CNAM in Sparkforge
- Go to Settings > Phone Numbers > Trust Center > CNAM (Voice).
- Start the registration flow.
- Provide your business registration number. An EIN is required, even for sole proprietors.
Sole proprietors with an EIN, registered LLCs, and corporations can all register. CNAM is currently U.S.-only.
Why CNAM doesn't fire on every call
- Database fragmentation. Carriers choose between roughly 8 different CNAM databases, often the cheapest one. That creates outdated or missing entries.
- Mobile gap. CNAM is bundled with most landline plans but treated as a premium add-on on mobile. Most mobile users see contact-list names, not CNAM names. Mobile penetration sits below 20%.
- Carrier opt-in. Even when CNAM is supported, the recipient's plan has to include CNAM lookup.
Net effect: U.S. CNAM works reliably on fewer than 20% of calls today.
What CNAM does not do
CNAM does not protect you from spam or scam-likely flags. Carrier analytics handle those independently. To improve answer rates, pair CNAM registration with healthy calling patterns, A2P 10DLC compliance, and reputation monitoring.
