Update Company or Associated Contact Workflow Action in Sparkforge

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

The Update Company or Associated Contact action modifies existing CRM records inside a Company-based Sparkforge workflow. It does not create new records — pair it with the Create action when you need both behaviors.

The Update Company or Associated Contact action is a workflow step in Sparkforge that updates existing Company records or Associated Contacts. Use it to keep CRM data accurate when external systems push changes through webhooks or when form submissions and other workflow events fire.

What This Action Does

  • Updates an existing Company record or any Associated Contact linked to that Company.
  • Maps fields from webhook payloads, workflow variables, or fixed text values.
  • Corrects or enriches Company and Contact data on incoming triggers.

This action only modifies existing records. Use the Create Company or Associated Contact action when you need to add new ones.

Action Configuration

1. Object Record to Update

  • Company — modify the Company record currently in the workflow.
  • Associated Contact — update one or more Contacts linked to that Company.

2. Field Mapping

Map source data to the fields you want updated. Examples:

  • Company Industry → {{inboundWebhookRequest.body.industry}}
  • Contact Phone → {{inboundWebhookRequest.body.phone}}
  • Contact Role → {{inboundWebhookRequest.body.role}}

3. Dynamic Value Sources

  • Inbound webhook payloads (e.g., {{inboundWebhookRequest.body.companyName}})
  • Company fields from the triggering record
  • Fixed text values (e.g., "Active", "Updated by Workflow")

4. Add Multiple Fields

Use + Add Field to update several fields in one action. Each row is one field-value pair.

5. Update Behavior

When updating Associated Contacts, the action only touches contacts linked to the workflow's current Company. If no associated contact matches, the action skips automatically.

6. Save the Action

Click Save Action. On each run, the workflow updates the configured fields with the latest values in context.

Example: Update Company From Webhook Data

Goal: Refresh company details whenever new lead data arrives from an external integration.

  • Workflow Type: Company-based
  • Trigger: Inbound Webhook (updated company data)
  • Object Record to Update: Company
  • Mappings: Company Name, Industry, Domain — all from webhook body

The webhook fires, the workflow runs, and the existing Company record updates with the new values.

Example: Update an Associated Contact

Goal: Update the job title and phone for a Contact linked to a Company.

  • Workflow Type: Company-based
  • Trigger: Company Updated or Inbound Webhook
  • Object Record to Update: Associated Contact
  • Mappings: Job Title → webhook title, Phone → webhook phone

Edge Cases

  • Available only in Company-based workflows.
  • Cannot create new records. Use Create Company or Associated Contact for that.
  • Map fields carefully — wrong mappings overwrite real data.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Update and Create?
Create adds new records. Update modifies existing ones. The Update action skips silently when no matching record exists.
What workflow types does this action support?
Company-based workflows only.
What happens if no Associated Contact matches?
The action skips automatically. The workflow continues without error.
Can I update many fields in one action?
Yes. Use + Add Field to map multiple field-value pairs in a single Update step.
How do I avoid overwriting good data?
Use conditional logic upstream so the Update action only runs when the incoming data is actually new or more accurate than what's in the CRM.
