How to Use the Split Action in Sparkforge Workflows
The Split action randomly distributes workflow contacts across up to 5 paths by percentages you define. Use it to A/B test subject lines, offers, or follow-up sequences without building separate workflows.
The Split action divides contacts in a workflow across multiple paths so you can test variations and compare results. It's the cleanest way to A/B test inside Sparkforge automations without duplicating an entire workflow.
What Split does
One distribution type is available today: Random Split. It assigns each contact to a path based on percentages you set — the same way a weighted coin flip would. The choice is independent for every contact, so over enough volume the split converges on the percentages you defined.
Features
- Set the percentage for each path (must total 100%).
- Up to 5 paths per Split action.
- Rename paths to label what's being tested.
- Stats track contacts entering and completing each path, plus goal conversions.
How to add a Split action
- In the workflow editor, click + to add an action.
- Select Split from the Internal Tools category.
- Choose Random Split from the Distribution Type dropdown.
- Rename Path A and Path B to match what you're testing.
- Set percentages for each path. Totals must equal 100%.
- Add up to 5 paths. Remove a path with the X icon.
- Click the Statistics icon to see how many contacts entered each path. Stats also display in the workflow if Stats View is on.
Example: testing subject lines
You're sending a promo email and want to test two subject lines. Add a Split action with two paths at 50/50. Path A sends version A, Path B sends version B. After a few days, compare opens, clicks, and conversions in the workflow stats.
Important behavior
Once a contact goes down a path, that's their path. If the same contact re-enters the workflow later, they'll always take the original path — not the other one. This keeps tests clean and prevents contacts from receiving conflicting messages.
