Search & Replace for Sparkforge WordPress Hosting
Sparkforge's built-in Search & Replace makes safe, database-level text updates across hosted WordPress sites. Preview match counts first, then apply changes in Live or Staging.
Search & Replace is a native WordPress hosting utility in Sparkforge that scans your site's database for a string and optionally replaces it across supported tables. Use it for post-migration cleanups, HTTP-to-HTTPS sweeps, and bulk URL or email fixes — no third-party plugins required.
Why use it
- Native and secure: No plugins or custom scripts needed.
- Preview first: Run a search-only pass to confirm match counts.
- Environment aware: Works in Live and Staging.
- Guided safety: Backup reminders and confirmations reduce accidental edits.
- Time savings: Bulk updates beat manual page-by-page edits.
Preview mode
- Enter the search string and choose Search without Replace.
- Review the match count to spot scope issues (an unexpectedly high number usually means the string is too broad).
- Tighten the search before running a replacement.
Matching behavior
- Case sensitivity: Matching respects case (HTTP vs http).
- Partial matches: Standard string matching is supported — use specific strings to avoid over-broad changes.
- Tables: Designed for common WordPress data including post content and metadata. Avoid sensitive system fields like credentials.
- Regex and wildcards: Not supported. Use literal strings.
How to run Search & Replace
- Open Sites → WordPress and select your site.
- In Quick Actions, choose Search & Replace.
- Enter the search value, target tables, and replacement value, then click Next.
- Wait for the completion confirmation.
- Review the summary and spot-check several pages and posts.
Best practice
- Take a backup before running any replacement.
- Test on Staging first when the site has custom plugins or large datasets.
- Run during low-traffic windows on busy sites.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I undo a Search & Replace?
There is no built-in undo. Use Backup & Restore to revert to the snapshot taken before the run.
Does the tool support regex or wildcards?
No. Only literal string matching is supported. Use precise strings for predictable results.
Will it handle serialized data safely?
It is built for common WordPress data patterns. For complex custom tables or plugin data, validate on Staging first.
Can I limit replacements to specific tables?
Not at this time. Use specific search strings and the preview count to control scope.
Does it work on WordPress Multisite?
Run it per site. Network-wide replacements in a single pass are not supported.
