Add Associated Records to Workflow Action in Sparkforge

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

Add Associated Records to Workflow enrolls records linked to the trigger record — by object type and association label — into a chosen workflow. It works in Contact, Company, and Custom Object workflows.

Add Associated Records to Workflow extends the standard Add to Workflow action by enrolling records that are associated with the trigger record, not just the current record. It works across Contact, Company, and Custom Object workflows.

How it differs from Add to Workflow

Add to Workflow only enrolls the current record (the contact in context, for example). Add Associated Records enrolls related records identified by an association label between the trigger and the targets.

What you configure

  • Select an object: the type of record to add (Contacts, Companies, Custom Objects).
  • Association Label: required dropdown that determines which associated records qualify. Does not apply to company-to-contact associations.
  • Workflow: the destination workflow.

Prerequisites

Custom objects (or contacts/companies) must already exist in the sub-account, and an association label must connect the trigger record to the target records.

Examples

Car ↔ Dealer (custom object workflow)

When a Car record is updated to Ready for Sale, enroll all assigned Dealers in the Dealer Notification workflow.

  • Object: Dealer
  • Association Label: Assigned Dealer
  • Workflow: Dealer Notification Workflow

Contact ↔ Contact (university)

At semester start, enroll all linked Parent contacts of each Student in the Semester Start Notification workflow.

  • Object: Contact (Parent)
  • Association Label: Parent-Child
  • Workflow: Semester Start Notification

Company ↔ Contact (VIP program)

When a Company is added to the VIP Client Program, enroll all of its associated Contacts in the VIP Communication workflow.

  • Object: Contact
  • Workflow: VIP Communication Workflow

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this enroll the trigger record itself?
No. It enrolls records that are associated with the trigger record. Use the standard Add to Workflow action for the current record.
What if there are no associated records?
Nothing is enrolled. The action runs only when at least one association exists for the chosen object and label.
Can I use it in all workflow types?
Yes. It works in Contact, Company, and Custom Object workflows.
Does it require a label for company-to-contact associations?
No. The Association Label requirement does not apply to company-to-contact relationships.
Can I follow this with another workflow action?
Yes. Once associated records are enrolled, you can chain workflow logic, send messages, or trigger downstream automations as usual.
