How to Use the Start IVR Workflow Trigger in Sparkforge

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

The Start IVR Trigger launches an interactive voice response menu when someone calls a Sparkforge phone number. It requires a Sparkforge Phone plan and a pre-built IVR configuration before the workflow can fire.

The Start IVR Trigger launches an interactive voice response (IVR) menu when an inbound call hits a Sparkforge phone number. Callers navigate options with their keypad and get routed to the right department or recorded prompts.

Limitation: voicemail cannot be tracked through the IVR trigger.

Trigger description

The Start IVR Trigger fires an IVR sequence on a specified event — typically an inbound call to a configured business number. It automates routing so callers can self-serve or get directed without a live operator picking up.

Prerequisites

  • Sub-account is subscribed to a Sparkforge Phone plan.
  • The IVR phone number is configured under your Sparkforge Phone setup.
  • An IVR configuration is built before the workflow trigger references it.

Important: IVR features require an active Sparkforge Phone plan. Without one, the Start IVR Trigger will not fire for inbound call routing.

Configure the trigger

  1. In the workflow trigger menu, choose Start IVR Trigger.
  2. Enter a descriptive trigger name, for example, "Trigger IVR call."
  3. Set the trigger to activate on an inbound call and choose the phone number it should respond to.
  4. Add custom field filters as needed.
  5. Save and activate the trigger.

Note: once a phone number is mapped to an IVR workflow, it cannot be mapped to a second IVR workflow.

Example: route callers by department

Goal: send inbound calls on your main business line into an IVR that branches to departments.

  1. Create the workflow trigger and select Start IVR.
  2. Set the trigger to activate on any inbound call to your main business number.
  3. Inside the filters, add the inbound phone number that should fire the IVR.
  4. Save and activate. Inbound calls on that number will now hit the IVR menu.
